Default Wierd screaming sound from front of engine?

Hello my xj40 3.6 have gotten a wierd sound from the front of the engine, not the sound of a belt not gripping, sound like something else but can't seem to locate it more the on the right front of the engine around the ac and hydraulics somewhere, haven't heard this kind of sound before so can't really place what it could be, it goes up **** the Rev but can stop fore a second before returning while reving.

Any ideas?

It could be the harmonic balancer has delaminated. Fairly common issue as these cars age. I did mine last year.

Here's my thread about it:

Larry

edit: I just listened to your video. Doesn't sound like the balancer after all. Not sure what though - a guess would be timing chain tensioner but wait for other responses, that's just a guess.

Hi Simon,

Like Larry, my mind went to the harmonic balancer until I watched and listened to your video. That's a weird one!

My computer speakers aren't great, but my guesses would include, in no particular order:

Air leak, perhaps at the EGR valve or camshaft cover breather hose

Exhaust leak

Power steering pump

Hydraulic brake power assist pump

Distributor

Failing bearing on a belt-driven component

Is your engine oil level topped up?

With a long screwdriver, wooden dowel, or section of flexible tubing used as a stethoscope, you may be able to pinpoint the source of the noise. Just take care to avoid touching any moving parts while you are probing around.

Please let us know what you find!

Cheers,

Don

Thank you for your answer, yes there is the correct oil level! What I can hear when just looking for above it sound to come from around the hydraulic pump and AC pump area but having a hard time to pinpoint it exactly but I will take another look tomorrow, the car has just been standing still because of this and haven't had any energy to look in to it because it just seems like I will be expensive and a lot of work haha.. but as said, will take another look tomorrow!

Best regards!

Default Found it

Was out looking for a while, sounded like it was coming from the power steering pump and some of the hoses was leaking so i was going to look over it, then removed the cover over the exhaust manifold and started again just to really try to locate it, and then I saw it, soot at a corner of the manifoldflange in the front of the engine, tightened the front nut and tested to start again and it was quiet!!

When I started the car in the beginning today the check engine light was on and because it was rumbling a little bit before it all comes together now, because of the exhausleak the oxygen sensor got the wrong info, now after it's fixed, quiet, no check engine and running fine.

Almost a ridiculously easy fix haha, thought this was going to be expensive. But guess I saved some money for fixing other faults on the car

Best regards!
