Wonderful surprise replacing rear shock bushings
My 92 '40 developed a very annoying clunking sound in the rear suspension. On every bump you can hear and feel a clunk and when breaking hard you feel the back end of the car shaking. After checking the rear suspension I couldn't find any play on it, so decided it must be the foam-rubber bushings that had worn out on the shock absorbers and the upper spring 'donut'. Disassembled the spring-shock assembly and found the following nasty surprise:the poly-urethane shock absorber bushing (CBC2933) had worn out and the metal bushing within had started hollowing out the upper spring cup (MMD3570AA). I've got an 'emergency' order at SNG Barratt for a grand total of €500, €211 a piece for the spring cups and €38 a piece for the bushings.
The badly worn out CBC2933 poly-urethane bushing
The hollowed out upper spring cup
Lesson of the day, don't ever say 'this goes surprisingly easy' before actually finishing a job. It's clear where the clunking sound came from though..
