Just a quick flashback to my idea of putting a wing on the boot. I have tried a few different vehicles to find one that looks a little better than the rest, and this one kinda hit my sweet spot.

Just on another note, I have finished modifying an old Commodore wing, and I am really happy with the way it is panning out. This will now be a part of the car when finished.

I wasn't sure if the curve of the wing would go onto the flattish rear end, but I like it.

The little bit of aluminium tape in the middle of the wing is only to hold it in place for the picture, no screws holding it in place yet.

I know some of these pics are things already posted but here I am showing you what a went through to find the wing I like the best, right up until the final wing is what I have decided to use, it will be a lot better when it is wearing its final colours I am sure.

This one was a Falcon wing, it looked okay, but really didn't do much for me.

It would have to sit a bit too high for my liking, so a no for this one.

This was a commodore S series, it was quite a bit lower, and almost the right anges at the ends.

It looked a little bit better, but the wing itself looked a tad too big, other than that it looked good, the wing will be painted Jaguar racing green with black ends, with a gold pinstripe around the border on the black and the leaping jaguar on each side, so the paint scheme will not be changing from this on the new wing.

then I found this wing, as you can see it has been narroed at the ends, and when I sat it on the car; well that little step made it look perfect for me.

I have been searching all the different manufacturers body kits, and I have taken a bit of a liking to these, They are from a 2007 model Ford Falcon XR6 sedan, ( a sports package offered here in Australia.) It just needs a bit of tweeking to make it fit, in this picture it is just sitting there, not screwed down yet.

I got these from a wrecking yard today, they are for a Ford Falcon XR6.

All you need now is some underbody neon and you'll be ready to cruise the strip, right?

lol

I have heard that the instrument panels on the 87/88 are prone to failure, how true is this and what can be done to change it to the analogue version?

Hi Clive,

Yes, the vacuum fluorescent instrument clusters in the early cars suffered from failing solder joints. Often they could be repaired by reflowing and supplementing the problem joints.

My recollection is that the electrical connectors and pinouts for the analog ICs are different, so considerable re-wiring would probably be necessary. You can compare the wiring diagrams in the Electrical Guides available at jagrepair.com (they're incorrectly filed under the XJ6 & XJ12 menu instead of the XJ40 menu).

Cheers,

Don

Well today I thought was a fairly productive sort of day, and I got a couple of jobs done that were overdue. So good weather and that gave me some good results.

Started painting the bootlid today, along with a couple of other items.

Decided to give the inner sunroof panel a lick of paint, it did have a bit of surface rust so I sanded it down quickly and then put some green onto it, do th the other side tomorrow if I get a chance.

I decided to give the underside of the sunroof a lick of paint as well before I start putting it all back together.

Chucked some green onto the wing.

Just wait until tomorrow and then I will sand it down and make it ready for the gold pinstrip and a gold leaping Jaguar.

taking advantage of the sun whilst I can.

Started to decorate the rear wing, the gold pinstripe separates the green and the black, although not so obvious here.

Had a Jaguar name plate spare, so I decided to use it.

in this shot, you can actually see the green in the paint. All the underside is black, while all the top is green.

Just have to seal it all under the clear now.

And this is how I wanted the other side to look.

We all know about you have just about got everything ready and you find your not even close. Well today was my day, just about had it all sanded down and almost reay for the primer, so I thought. while I was sanding away I thought this body filler feels like there is a lot of it, Well there was a lot of it, so I ground it all out and cut away the rusted area, and proceeded to weld in some metal. We will see how far things go when we get ready for paint again.

Time to put some metal back into it.

Same problem, same place, but there isn't much rust being left behind.

Made up a repair patch for the rear, all welded up and ready for final shaping.

Well today was another productive day, I got the rear panels repaired, getting closer to the painting stage.

New metal welded into place, now it is time to start shaping it all.

Had another go at the old XJ40 today, sort of getting a little bit messed up, trying to get the car put together again and then having to go to work, and praying like hell it doesn't rain, 'cuse I don't have a shed.

The Falcon skirt came a little too short, but I don't give up that easy. Time to start getting ready to extend it with fiberglass.

The lines here don't look like they are in the right place, but when it is all pushed into place it all comes together nicely. The other thing to note. This is going to be a mold to extend the skirts.

Welding and grinding is finished, now time to start shaping it all again.

Well the glass skirt has turned out pretty good I feel, it just needs to be shaped and dressed up a tad, and it will be ready for paint.

The holes you see in the pictures are there for the resin and filler to get all the way through, just to help it all stay together.

A little bit of sanding and a bit of body filler and a bit more sanding, I need to use the dremel to finish it off before painting.

Well that part has been done, tidy up the filler strip and get it all screwed down, should be good to go.

Finally got a shape for the insert done, unfortunately it has started to rain so now I have to abort any further work until the weather fines up.

I usually find it is a good idea to step back and look at what you have done, and ask yourself "does that like right?" Now I have to wait for the sun to come out again.

Well today was a mixed bag of events, my work vehicle needed to be repaired after hitting some of our wildlife, so this was pretty much all I could do for the Jag this week.

The blemmish you see at the bottom left corner was a bit of hair, made worse by trying to remove it, so I will have to sand it back and apply a few fresh coats of clear.
