Ok Guys
After much head scratching I belive the XJ40 is running sweet as, not sure why but I belive it was a number of things ,to start with the dirty connection,plugs under the bonnet,a heavy rain the car was caught in and the drain around the fuel filler was blocked, so maybe water in the fuel, a bad lot of fuel, a dicky fuel pump, old fuel filter and just a general lack of care for the car pulgs ,dizzy cap and leads. We drove around all day going from shop to shop and beach about 200Ks and all is well so far.
