Default XJ40 Wagon Mecum Auction

Saw this in the Mecum listings. No Reserve. $25k to $35k estimate. For the XJ40 addict I guess. Comes from the “Rick Smith” collection which has some very serious metal. We’re talking million dollar cars.

From my perspective, that is not an attractive vehicle. The drooping tail of an XJ40, while quite well suited to the overall saloon car look, in this modification does nothing for the flow of the line. In fact, it tends to accentuate the undesirable "full load" look.

Not a successful mod IMO and not a car I would personally want. With all it's fancy trim etc, this is a classic example of lipstick on a you-know-what.

YMMV

Larry

I agree with Larry, the rear wagon addition changes the whole look of the car. If I wanted or needed a wagon of this vintage I would buy a Mercedes W124. This car probably has value on its rarity alone, but the look are not for me, but I am also one who, if given a pristine XKE, would sell it immediately and buy a car that actually looked good.

To each their on.

In the history of the automobile, there really haven't been many really good-looking wagons. The Germans may have the best overall track record (Audi, M-B, and even BMW). The Jaguar XF Sportbrake is pretty sharp. Porsche calls some of its attractive new Taycans and Panameras "wagons," but I'd lump them into the crossover category.

My late father might have liked the XJ40 estate simply because it appears to be capacious and functional, and Dad liked vehicles he could put a lot of stuff in, including our five family members and camping gear. But I agree it would never win any beauty awards.

Cheers,

Don

I believe this was a Brisbane car that was for sale a little while ago. My first car was a panel van, the Jaguar is the car that I like in my middle age, My wife said no

Still good

agree. But don't forget the alfa Romeo 156 SW.

not sure how that did in the USA, but it sold in massive numbers in europo. And for good reasons too. What a car. I had one. Drives like a sports vehicle, while giving everything to take your hole family with you.

You are right, Wilfred! I hadn't forgotten the 156 SW - definitely one of the best-looking wagons ever. I don't know if we got any of them in the U.S.A., sadly. I was trying to not turn Jagsandmgs thread into a discussion of the best-looking wagons of all time but I was destined to fail.

Cheers,

Don

Bought one of these at a garage sale for $300 back in one or the other "gas crisis" eras. 7MPG on a good day.

1973 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser ..now THAT'S a station wagon LOL

I have the sales figure right here… let’s see…. 0. That’d be ZERO cars.
