Xj81 starter relay location?
Can anyone here tell me where the starter relay is located on a 1994 XJ12 ?
I have a car that has been sitting for a long time and when I turn the key the instrument cluster lights up as normal but nothing from the starter motor.
No clicks or any noises at all. I have the XJ81 workshop manual on a CD or DVD but even after much searching I am unable to locate it here.
Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe on all (?) generation XJ40s the started relays is located behind the passenger knee bolster. Couple of screws and plastic what-ya-ma-call-it's and it should pop off. Should be a label on the rear side of the knee bolster stating which colour relay is which as well.
But if I were you I'd check the battery first. Whenever my 91 '40 wouldn't start it was always a drained battery, even though the dash lights up. The starter motor just takes a greater amount of energy than the bulbs behind the dash do.
Let us know when you get it started! Good luck!

OK, after many hours of digging around here I finally found 1993.5 - 1994 XJ12 (XJ81) 6.0 litre parts and service manual CD from Jaguar Classic Parts that I bought many years ago now. The part number on the CD is JHM1177 and it is a discontinued item according to the Terrys Jaguar site and the Jaguar Classic site.
Unfortunately even though I have found the CD and loaded it up on my desktop system here, it is of ZERO help! The wiring diagrams and harness diagrams are the WORST designed things I have EVER seen. They are positively cryptic. The wiring diagrams don't have text descriptions for the items on each diagram. Instead an item on the wiring diagram has a number like 169.3 and as far as I can tell the nomenclature for the wire colors is not listed anywhere in the wiring or harness diagrams.
Also I looked in the service manual and there does not seem to be any mention of a starter relay. There is a section on the various relays, a section on removing & replacing the starter motor, and a section on replacing the starter motor solenoid. No where is there a mention of a starter relay.

I believe the starter relay on a USA 94 XJ12 should be in part of a relay module on the right side behind that knee bolster/underscuttle that Douwe mentioned. There is a relay module with a blue base. The starter relay may be labeled G4. There is an electrical guide for the 94 XJ12 that sounds more helpful than what you have found so far. Send me a PM and I can email it to you.

Are you sure it is the relay? I had the same problem on my XJ81 and it was not the relay but the starter motor itself that was stuck. A good massage with a lump of metall temporarily brought it back to life. Well worth a try, even though the starter motor is not coveniently located.

I can't find S82_94 on Gus' site (jagrepair.com). I think Graham (GGG) can upload it to the large file area here at JF if you have it in digital format.
Thanks, and thanks again for all the files at Gus' site and here that you uploaded!
Cheers,
Don

When I joined this forum I was contacted by a forum member to get in touch with Translator.
He gave me a username/password to the large file area but that was YEARS ago.
A while back there was a limit on .pdf large files so I did not think it would work?
I tried to upload and IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!(must have changed the file size allowance?)
