Default 1973 Jaguar XJ6

My husband is rebuilding his Jag and is having trouble with the rear main oil seal which was sent to him by V & A Spiteri in Victoria. The frame fits but the seal is too tight.

Default rear main seal

I assume this is the original type of rope seal, not a rubber seal. If so, it needs to be worked into the groove, I used to use the wooden handle of my hammer. Then cut off the excess, shouldn't be much. There is a kit available to convert to rubber seal, but it is about $400, and requires crank to be machined.

I thank you for your replies. Yes, he did not realise with the new part that he had to grind the crankshaft. He is a very happy man that it has been resolved. Thanks again.

So, just to clarify, he is replacing the rope seal with a split lip-type seal ? This is a good mod to do if the engine is out, because the old rope-type seals were never really much good; my car always leaked a bit even though I had replaced the seal and done it correctly.

Default Thanks all very much for your help

Yes you are correct he is replacing with split type seal as he is sick of the leaking. I know nothing but hear his groans all the time. He has no use for internet so me and my son are helping him. He has worked on Jags all his life and a great lover of them. This one just stumped him because he really did not read the instructions. He has got it now. Had to get a new seal though because he had tried to fit the other and broke it lol
