Default 1979 XJ12L (S2) new gas tank

Hi everyone. This is my first post.

I have been spending the last 18 months restoring a 1979 S2 XJ12L that have been sitting in a garage for a very long time. The gas tanks were rusted ad full of old gas. After trying to restore the tanks, I have decided to replace them. My tanks have a hole in the bottom front (about 2 inches) where the fuel sender is installed. You can access it from the wheel well when the tanks in place. The rear of the tanks (facing the rear bumper) have no hole or opening of any kind.

I ordered 2 new tanks from Rockauto (LILAND Global made in Taiwan). I selected « exterior fuel pump » gas tanks for a 1979 XJ12.

The tanks I received have no hole on the bottom front of the tank (where the fuel sender is sopposed to go), but have one at the rear, about at mid-hight.

I went back on the Rockauto website to try to figure out why the new tanks are different then the old ones.

According to the pictures attached to their products, the tank with the hole in the front is for a car with « in tank fuel pump » and the tank

with the hole in the rear (facing bumper) is for cars with « exterior of tank fuel pump ».

I am sure that there is a Jag specialist here who can help me figure this out.

attached are pictures of the old (red arrows indicate fuel sender hole) and new tanks

Thanks

Christian

I ran into a similar issue when I ordered a set of tanks from Specter for my XJ12C. It took a while to figure out but they ended up sending me carb fuel tanks instead of fuel injected ones. It took a while to figure out but i got it sorted. Give them a call and describe what you have.

Thanks for your reply
I made additional research and my conclusion is that I received the right gas tank from Rockauto
. It seems that being the last production year of the S2 serie, my car may have been equipped with "pre-1975" gas tank.. Left overs from the S2 production. As long as they fit in place, and as long as I have the right fuel senders, I beleive that I will be fine.
