I'm going to do some salvage yard hunting for a Jaguar tank. I cannot believe how bad the fuel system is with corrosion and rust. Every rubber hose is dry and brittle. I removed the fuel system plumbing from the rear to replace hoses and flush the metal lines. I ran into an odd thing though. What is this? It's part of the fuel system plumbing

Not sure, Doug will know. I suspect it is the tank changeover valve!!

Exactly right, Carl.

With 12v applied it allows fuel from the RH tank to flow into the fuel pump. When 0v applied, it allows fuel from the left tank to flow into the fuel pump

That's a really clean looking S3, Hafrod! Is the interior black? I have to say, the darker colours, blue and black, are by far my favourite on these cars.

re: fuel tanks, I'm relatively new to these cars so I adhere as closely as possible to Haynes when doing anything and make sure to search the forums for advice as well. The only thing with the manual is that the cars were new when they were taken apart, and 30+ years of Canadian weather meant that nothing is as easy as they make it look!

the tanks were not too difficult though, when I took them out of my parts car BUT I stress that I didn't need to take any care with the bodywork since the shell was going to be recycled when I was done. Getting the filler necks out was a pain and I damaged the apertures getting them out, but it could have been done more carefully had I been so inclined, it just would have taken longer.

It had crossed my mind to fit the single tank from an XJ40 - that way the filler neck would be in more or less the right place to match up with the left hand filler cap on the S3, with the other remaining in place. I haven't been able to get access to one to measure it though. Has anyone done this before?

I removed the gold cad coated fuel junction block at the front of the spare tire well. The top port unbolts so I removed it to clean. I noticed a very small jet in the top port. It was completely clogged. I used a bristle from one of my brass brushes to open it back up. What is this port for? Fuel return? why is it jetted?

My air intake components are in bad shape. The rubber isolating mounts for the air flow meter are all broken, the ribbed hose is cracked and hard, the rubber hose to throttle body is really hard. The air filter is caked, and the pipe fitting on the air filter housing for the smog pipe is broken off. I have some rubber bushings I'm going to use to remount the meter. I also have a new cone shaped washable air filter element that fits on the air flow meter. I did find a remanufactured sticker on my air flow meter and it is very clean inside. Did not get to work on the car much yesterday or today for constant rain.

It's an air bleed.

You can buy new mounts if you want to. They're out there.

My XJ6 has been sitting under my car port on ramps for a couple months now. My arthritis does not let me work in the cold very well. It is supposed to be high 60s in temp tomorrow so I'm going to work on it all day. I'm hoping to drive it around my neighborhood just before dark. I got home early from work today and got out my Dewalt buffer. The paint shined up pretty good but only got one side done. Going to replace the fuel injector O-rings and hoses, change the oil, plug wires, and grease the suspension. Big order for one day but I bought some coffee

As well as the manual Jose suggested to download, you may as well also download the S57 wiring diagram in the same area. Firstly so you know it exists, and secondly you own a Jag (and one that has been sitting a while) so you will probably need it at some stage.

Congratulations on your new toy :-)

Got it running today but have a jumper wire on the fuel pump relay=Ign to Fuel Pump (white to white/green). I replaced the relay with one I had here and it's still not turning the pump on. I'm confused on this. I drove it around my neighborhood for awhile. It has a loud clatter on the top of the engine which I assume it needs adjustment. I removed one cam cover and I guess it takes shims like motorcycles??? It still runs rough, the oil light is on at idle but goes out while driving? Weak oil pump? I changed the oil and its full. I noticed the water pump is leaking at the weap hole underneath. It was a quart low on trans fluid so I put one quart of Type F in. Trans shifts great. I'm pretty bummed out so going to shower and relax.

Might be a wiring issue, or the AFM switch, or the fuel pump diode pack

This might help

Fuel Pump Circuit Checklist

Also, did your replacement relay have the correct terminal designations? You need one marked 30-85-86-87-87. If you used one with 30-85-86-87-87A, it might not work

A little clicking is common/normal. If it sounds worrisome you might have a tappet guide walking upward and hitting the camshaft. This can be bad news if you don't catch it in time and install a stake down kit. You need to take the cam covers off to inspect.

What weight oil? How many miles on the engine?

Might be that the pressure switch for the light is flakey.

Not all that bad of a job to replace the w/pump on one of these cars. Not fun, but not too bad, really.

Don't know what a stake down kit is. I had the cam cover removed on the noisy side but don't know what I'm looking for. I do appreciate the info.

This will give you an idea:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...engine-141291/

The tappets fit into tappet guides, which are pressed into the cylinder head. Sometimes the guides walk upwards....almost always on the exhaust side of the engine....and hit the cam. The stake down kit (there are 2-3 variations on the theme) holds the guides in place. If you DO have a guide problem you might be able to catch it early enough to save the day. Tap the guide back down and install a stake down kit

Cheers

I searched here and read a lot of info on the stake down kit. I'll pull the cam cover off again today. I believe my loud tap is on the drivers side. The disk shaped guides should be flush with the head surface? If the stake down kit is a flat piece of steel, I may fabricate my own.

After checking ebay for a stake kit, $35 is easy on the wallet. I ussumed it would be over $100+. Where's the best deal on a water pump?

I have never checked to see if the heater works so tried it today. The blower is not coming on. Can't hear or feel anything. I am about to the end of my rope with all the issues. Found an 85 XJ6 that runs and drives but needs work for $1000 OBO. Spoke to the guy on the phone and scheduled a day to look at it. This may be my future parts car. If I had a parts car, it would be soooo much nicer. He said it has a slight leak at water neck and has a miss at idle. 175,000 miles
