1981 XJ6 been sitting awhile, What to do?

My water pump came in Friday and waiting on some valve shims. So a good 4 day weekend, I should be able to get it out for a real highway test drive. I did notice when I backed out of my driveway, I heard a howling sound coming from maybe the rear section of the car. I was actually giving it some throttle while backing up. I don't hear it just idling backwards. Its only while accelerating in reverse. Anyone got any ideas? This car has sat for at least 5 years. Driving around my neighborhood, the forward gears are fine.

I had taken a break on my XJ and pulled the cover off last weekend. Tried to start it and no fuel pump power again. Pressed the inertia switch again but it was not tripped. I hot wired it with a jumper wire on relay and it started. I had shimmed the valves to spec but it still clatters and installed the hold down kit. Its not the fuel injectors clicking. The oil light is on at idle but goes off on a rev up. It left a big oil spot on the ground so after much thought, I'm going to convert it to V8. I have a rebuilt 350 engine and a rebuilt turbo 350 trans in my garage from a past project. I have been building street rods since 1992 and love fabrication. Very well versed in the old Chevy small blocks. I ordered a conversion book and plan on doing everything clean. I will also replace the factory gauges and senders with Classic Instruments. If anyone from this site wants a FREE 4.2 engine and trans, come and get it. I live in Verdigris OKLAHOMA.

Whose book? Three good ones out there.
In another forum, we helped a guy sort out the power plant for his
scratchbuilt "woody wagon". Low to the ground. Fantastic wood skills.
Power: 4.2 XK car'd engine with the original BW!!! first version, too low. Raised it with 19" Model A ford spokers.
It's exhaust was a teeny glass pack right of the manifold and to the side. No tail pipes at all. Too bad, inever got to heat what that critter sounded like.
I had to give my wounded 4.2 and sound BW away. No takers to buy it.
My lump purred on it's 30 minute trip to a nearby town to my Dos's office. VA clinic. We both are fine....

Got dumped in mid posting!! Here and the other Jag forum!!!
Hafrod: Great choice. Andrew is a good guy. Lots of jag knowledge.
willing to share it. Helped me a lot, even though, I bought the kit of another. I needed that help, no question.
LnrB;
Whaoh, bed rails are a great source of material for project. Abunbdant. Inexpensive and often free. The steel is usually
pretty good and cuts and welds well. I've used many.
In a past trailer project, I needed some tube steel.
Two angle iron bed rails arc'd together did it. That project
went way beyond "project creep".

Yes, I know, Carl, it was the favorite raw material on the farm because they were CHEAP, high quality iron, came in standard, predictable dimensions and were Very strong. Husband even has a few pieces here.
However, a Much better thought out trans mount could have been fabricated, one that allows normal sized hands (mine are small) to reach in and check things like wiring, speedo connection, stuff like that. I wasn't kidding when I said it was a cobbled up mess.

Best trans mount for clearance and easy to make
Jaguars That Run had their trans mount that I "modified" on my old SII... allowed for the most room around the trans...plus it allowed the dual exhaust to have a
home as well.
Just use Grade 8 bolts, nuts and washers...note the deep pan on the 700R.. DO NOT USE ONE...use a trans cooler instead as it reduces the ground
clearance on a Jaguar too much. The bolts in the photo were too long and were replaced with shorter ones later on...
home as well.
