1983 jaguar xj6 speedometer

If you swap speedo's beware of the long arm of the law. Nutty, but, DMV's have reg's to protect the consumer against dishonest dealers that would run the miles back.
Speedo repair shops were once somewhat common. They can still be found on line.
But, simplist is as Jose suggests, David Boger at everydayxj!!
Mine is nuts. But, it is because of a mismatch. GM sending pulses to the Jaguar speedo. A digital converter can't quite make the correction. a bunch of dip switches, but not enough. I have another method, but it entails some harness work
Not yet!!! I have other more pressing harness issues.

Not what I meant.
1. If you mess with it, it may no longer represent mileage as it was before you took it apart.
2. If you replace it, the chances that the mileage on the replacement unit will be the same as the one in the car are slim to none.
3. If the replacement shows more than the actual, no DMV issue, but if you sell???
Not a big issue, just nit picking.
4. Because of my car's lump status it has recorded more than actual miles. Am I concerned. well, a little, but not much.
5. My insurance company asks for miles each renewal. I just calculate and give them a number. as it is quite low, it doesn't jar them.

Carl,
the long arm of the law cannot extend to deffective speedometers. so I don't worry about it;
Besides, by now these cars are considered "antiques" in many States, which in my opinion, when a car reaches that "magic" age, it should be exempted from annual registrations and should be given a free, permanent license plate.
I bet the speedo can be repaired, some spring or gear may have come undone, that's all, it is a mechanical counter.
