More not-quite-certain stuff but I recall from my days as a parts guy at GM dealerships that the 80s vintage rack and pinions used by GM (many were terrible, by the way) were made by Saginaw and TRW. If a Jag has used a rack it might well be labeled or stamped as such.
The Series III parts catalog mentions "Adwest" and ""Alford and Alder" rack and pinion assemblies. If racks from other suppliers were used, they are not mentioned.
Cheers

OK, now I'm wondering if you have a "better" SIII parts book than I do – I couldn't find anything more than the part numbers, CBC1714-1716.
Hemming Sports and Exotic (January 2017) had a brief article on Alford and Adler, which said Leyland had closed the A&A factories by 1980, 'though by then the name was long gone'. So that may explain why you've never seen other than an Adwest rack in series III...
We're really down a rabbit hole here, aren't we? :-)
Andrew.

In this case I'm using Jaguar Publication RTC9885CF Parts Catalog which, as far as I know, is still being published. A week's pay says it hasn't been edited since August 1986 when it was released!
You probably have something more recent

Indeed.
A lot of it is just curiosity. But sometimes also an effort to find alternate/better/easier/cheaper replacement parts.

Lauriston, you welcome.
you can download from here, the Service and Parts Manual Sections for the Series 3 XJ-6.
go to the sticky XJ6 & XJ12 'HOW TO' quick links at the top of this page, then scroll down until you see the file links. Download one .pdf file at a time. (Engine, Body, Electrical, etc.,etc.)

Maybe I am too new to the website, but I cannot find the "XJ6 & XJ12 HOW TO" link or sticky. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
