1985 xj6
i am currently looking at a 1985 XJ6 with 46K miles on it. It is supposd to be flawless, except the add says
1985 Jaguar XJ6 Medium metallic brown & completely loaded. The sun roof has never leaked, **** carpet, dual gas tanks. This car has ALWAYS been kept in a garage and rarely driven only 46,000 actual miles. Approximately 15,000 miles on the tires. The only flaw this car has is a slight bit of rust over the corner of the windshield as most this age do. We are only the 2nd owner, need to get an economical car for son to go to college. Serious inquiries only please.
the bolded part of the add about the rust, is this a very big deal? I guess what im asking is if it is starting to rust there in just alittle while will it be rusting everywhere or if i have that fixed will it stop?
thanks

I've got a 76 XJ12L, and I've only got rust in two spots:
Lower back part of the left rear door, and a pea-sized spot on my front left fender, above and behind the wheel well. I don't have ANY rust around the windshields...front nor rear.
In answer to your question, "if it is starting to rust there in just alittle while will it be rusting everywhere or if i have that fixed will it stop?"
Two problems with asking this question where rust is concerned:
1. What area do you live in? Is it really humid? Really dry? A little of both depending on the day? Do you get a lot of rain/snow/fog?
2. You didn't say to what extent the rust is. Is it merely surface rust? Or is it a bubble of rust? A bubble will (more often than not) indicate DEEP rust, which would mean sheet metal replacement. Surface rust will mean little more than a good sanding (down to the bare metal, with NO SIGNS of rust anymore), then rust treatment and/or primer.
You should give the car a really good looking over. Check your battery basket, under the doors, under the trunk, INSIDE the trunk, inside the engine compartment, door hinges, etc. Go over it with the proverbial fine-toothed comb.
Another thing: I would question those actual miles. For a car that old, the odometer only has enough digits to cover tens of thousands (as opposed to newer odoms, that cover up to 999,999.9 miles). That's a 25 year old car, which would mean less than 2000 miles driven per year of its existence. I would question that (check the title for any mileage discrepancies).

It is common but not the end of the world. I pulled the windshield on mine and repaired the damage. New gasket and put all back together. Friend did the paint work, you could not tell it was ever there. Every car in the world has an issue and this is one that the series 3 must learn to live with. ( counciling available when coping is difficult)

Mine had rust at the bottom of driver's side front windscreen. It gott fixed when I had it redone more than 10 years ago. Haven't had anymore problems. My car however lives in New Mexico. Nebraska cars are going to have ore rust problems. I used to live there. A low mileage car can be scary, might mean that it's spent it's life in the shop or it has been sitting for long periods. Mine has 210,000 miles and is my daily driver.
