Default 1990 Series 3 XJ12 - Fuse location for interior lights and aerial

This is so annoying as I know I have found it before. I blew the fuse for my interior lights when I took a door card off to close the window that is too weak to close itself...

I know some have this as fuse 3, but that's not the case for me. I am sure it was a hidden in line fuse, but I can't remember where and although I have hunted down several hidden in line fuses, I can't find it. Hours Googling haven't located it either..

I'm going mad. I should be able to just ignore this and wait until I remember, but I can't let it go!

lazy windows up and down are usually caused by the switch.

remove the switch, disassemble it, clean the contact points with emery paper, and the window speed returns to normality.

as to the interior lights fuse, the Owner's Handbook would tell you where it is, no?

what about the fuse doors on the knee panels? no labels or legends?

Thanks for the tip on the windows, I’ll give it a try.

Should have said it’s not in the knee panel fuse boxes. None of them are labelled for interior lights or aerial and I’m pretty sure from memory from last time I had this issue that the fuse was somewhere obscure. All knee panel fuses are OK and new.

ok. Then it must be under the center console shifter panel, or behind one of the center console side panels where the floor vents are, or in the trunk/boot where the engine computer and other electrics are.

How do you know you blew a fuse?

have you checked the door jamb switches by pushing the plungers several times?

I've checked the centre console side panels, but now you mention it, I think it may have been under an ashtray... possibly. I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I deffo blew the fuse when I took out the door card. I shorted the puddle light connections at the time and was plunged into darkness!

Turned out to be fuse 13 labelled aircon clutch.. Fuse looked perfect, but tested dead and that was it. The hidden in-line fuse I was thinking of was the one for the cigar lighter in the centre side panel.

All sorted now thanks Jose. I've also sorted the slow window with your tip for cleaning the switch up.

Now I just need to put everything back together...

great! putting everything back together is always the most tedious part !

you might add a note somewhere about the compressor clutch fuse controlling the interior lights too. I'm surprised this is not documented, I mean, who would be looking at the compressor clutch fuse for interior lights?

It probably is documented....."somewhere" . The owners manuals probably has the correct info but sometimes Jaguar was lax on detailing changes.

It's hard to find info specific to the Series III V12s, especially post-1987 models

In my service manual of the series 3 is a listing of the fuses. It says that on RH stg vehicles from 1983 fuse nr 13 in the auxiliary fusebox protects the map and interior lamps, clock, aerial and cigar lighter. On LH stg vehicles from 1983 onwards fuse 13 protects airconditioning relay and clutch.

Another trick for lazy windows is to lubricate the window guide channels with a silicon spray lubricant.
I generally avoid silicon in cars, but I was resurrecting my series 3 after the covid layoff and all of the windows were a bit lazy.
A friend who is a retired mechanic suggested this lubricant and it really worked very well.
Cheers
