Hi All
We have a 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas . We've run into an issue where the mechanic we use cannot get this check engine light to go off. He says the system in our car is too old for his computer to read/diagnose. Not sure I've ever heard of that before, but I suppose it's possible,
He was not able to properly diagnose why this light is on because he can't read the codes.
Has anyone else run into this before?
If so, where can I get a diagnostic reader that'll work here?
We disconnected the battery for like 5 minutes and as soon as ya hook it back up and start the car, the dang check engine light comes back on.
This section is for the older models. Repost your question in the X300 section.
But, as long as we're here...
Your '96 should be "OBDII".....which is a very common thing. Any generic OBDII scan tool or code reader will work for the fundamental codes and diagnostics.
You can uses an Elm27 and an PC program called TouchScan for Windows free for 30 days. The Elm327 like shown below is under 13$ . I just got this one show below for a Ford project and it also works on the Jag.
