Last time I checked/compared, the T700 conversion, the kit, additional misc parts, and an overhauled trans would end up being $2000-$2500.
The UK kit mentioned by Jose, which uses a ZF trans as I recall, was $4000-$5000
If a person really wanted a 4-speed auto I reckon the price difference offsets having to cope with mis-aligned gearshift markings
Cheers

i did my 700R4 swap in 1994, 1978 XJS V12, been 21yrs ,no problems!
but i also changed my rear end ratio to 3.73-1.
in overdrive final ratio is 2.58, better than the 2.88, so plenty quiet at speed, fair MPG!
with the 700 1st gear trans ratio of 3.06,acceleration is terrific, and overdrive hyway cruising is just perfect.
and the shift tower, i use a B&M shift lever, works fine,, also my 700 came out of a 1990 chevy/GMC 350 van, last yr for mechanical throttle valve cable.
i think after that they went electronic shift, donno! trans called 4L60E, which actually is even better, but fits in same place.
now if you want to be more fancy, the GM 4L80E HD trans. with a 6 speed kit , makes for some interesting conversation!

Carl: you need to replace the starter because the GM transmission does not work with the original Jaguar starter. Read about it in the link below:
Jaguar conversions, swaps, parts, service and advice - from John's Cars in Dallas.
yes, G Whitehouse conversion is double the price of John's Cars, wonder why?
One reason must be that the price includes the ZF XJ-40 transmission, and they do provide a proper gearshift indicator for heaven's sake! What the heck, it's only $5 grand, my car is worth it.

Agreed - refer above comments from me and LnrB.
When you own/drive one, you get used to the slightly out of alignment detents on the selector quadrant. It never bothers me and certainly wouldn't deter me from a similar conversion again.

to add , any of these overdrive transmissions should have(but not absolutly needed), a rear drive ratio change, unless you have plenty of torque! like 6.5-7L engine,LOL.
quick look at 4 gear overdrive ratio, a 2.88 would be 1.99-1 ratio,HOLY Mackral bat man! fine for Bonneville speed trials, where they give you 1-2 miles to get up to speed!
a 3.31 would come out around 2.30-1,
i have driven some cars like that and it is annoying , having the trans down shift and up shift on any small upgrade hills, like going over an interstate over pass.
and just wanting to do a slow pass on flat hyway, trans would shift down!, maybe down into second gear, engine roaring ahead.
but to each his own. just explaining possibilites.

Jose:
I stand corrected. GM flex plate and torque converter and thusly a GM starter.
Intriguing that an older GM starter fits the Jaguar bell housing. Actually, the Lucas critter and the Delco are very similar in architecture and heft as well!!!
As far as I knw, the 480LE, is "only" a four speed box. In essence, a 4l60E on steroids. Each a great design.
My LT1 is the torque version for the "big" cars, as opposed tot he alloy head version for the smaller guys. the latter torque up higher and more HP.
Great match, lots of torque for the "porky" Jaguar.
Mine pulls the 2.88's in OD with alacrity. Plenty quick off the line as well.
And will go much faster than I care to drive it, any more. Ten years ago......
The XJS shift tower matches the transmission. V12 XJS's used the GM transmission.
Solves electric issues as well...

correct the 4L80E is TH 400 with a 4th gear overdrive added! 80 series is 35lbs heavier than 60 series(i weighed both).
the 4l60E is the lower level Th350 with a 4th gear overdrive added, both work out quite well.
but as HPs increased GM modded them to higher torque levels.
now 4L85E,(4L90E) most internals stronger .(think Cadillac Escalade with supercharged 6.2 LS engine).
4L60E now at 4L65E, 4L70E, stronger internals!
for the 4L80E an aftermarket performance Transmission company has a
KIT available to convert it to a 6 speed trans. it takes there TCU (transmission control unit), and some internal changes.
but as usual hot rodders cant leave well enough alone, R&D are using the new GM 8 speed trans, no relation to the old 4L series.
if they are as impressive as i have driven some,i'm all for it!
just gotta love that sport mode and adaptive drive stuff(electronics never stop improving things).
there is no way a manual trans. can keep up to well setup 8speed automatic trans! it seems it adapts to the perfect gear every time, right in the perfect torque range, shifts are so quick rpm so close you hardly notice!
Damn , never thought i'd say that, but you gotta drive one for a few days!

Zip,zip, zip... All in the box. And, the old tech guy is banging gears at the risk of shucking a couple!!!
Way back when, my Ford T "hot rod" four banger could beat bigger and faster cars off the line and across an intersection and a bit more.
They banged gears, I relied on much faster shifts. Two speed planetary stock box + a Ruxtel two speed axle. Four forward available. But, three best for an impromptu stop sign race. I shifted the axle on torque. Press the low pedal. throttle WOT, Release the low pedal, Axle lever back. off throttle for an instant and back on. the axle shifted on torque release. I now in the missing second gear of most "T's. wind it out, not much. lever forward, lift, torque release shifts axle to high. I got caught up with about then.
Jeep kinda like that. It's 4.0 6, not all that powerful. Gear in "2', stand on it, then quickly change to "3". Fair.
LT1, the iron headed version, just place in D and stand on it. it does it's thing.
It will take most Bimmers!!!!
Top speed? Somewhere circa 125? I am not going to find out......
