'84 XJ6 A/C question....
#2
My 87 XJ6 VP does the same except it blows cold air regardless of the temp setting. I know there are some other electric issues being that the windows don't work; the saloon is at the shop as we speak. I will keep you posted on the results that may help point you in the right direction...

The climate control is a little tricky on these cars so there are many possible causes to your problem.
By far the most likely culprit is the "amplifier". These are about $200-$300 from most suppliers.
Also make sure the vacuum hose to the heater valve is in good shape. If it leaks or collapses the loss of vacuum will open the valve and let hot water into the heater core.
When the air goes from cold to hot is there also a change in which outlets the air is coming from and/or do you hear the faint hum of the servo as the change takes place? If so, it suggests that the system *thinks* hot air is being asked for and is responding accordingly. Again, the amplifier is a likely culprit but you could have a temp sensor problem.

Thanks for the replies, guys, I appreciate them.
When it works properly, after setting the a/c, the center vents will open and blow cold air. This will be OK until I turn the car off, it's not like an intermittent thing.
When it malfunctions, the center vents will stay closed and the side/foot well vents will blow hot air. There's is nothing I can do to get a/c until I turn the car off (sometimes), so this is not intermittent either. It either works for the drive or it doesn't.
The freon charge is Ok. I don't know what an 'amplifier' is, so I can't comment, does this still sound like it?
Someone suggested the a/c compressor relay might be the culprit...how does that sound?
Thanks again, i appreciate your time!
