85 XJ6 Engine Start Problem

it should only start in P or N.
so it could be the Neutral Safety Switch, which in the 1985 can be located on the side of the transmission under the car, or in front of the shifter tower depending when the car was built.
at the transmission it will be a round switch with 4 wires connecting to it.
at the shifter tower it will be a roller switch with 3 wires.

Another thought:
If the neutral switch might have been bypassed. An easy way is simply simply ground the black (or black/green) wire at the starter relay, but there are other possibilities. This would typically been done if the neutral safety switch was giving problems. So, if you find a problem with the switch you might still have to look for altered wiring that would suggest it was bypassed.
