I studied the shifter that I have which came in a hoard of parts I bought from Series 2 XJ and 1989 XJ-S:

picture 1: the shifter, no Speed Control switch below First Gear.

picture 2: the round switch on the left side of the shifter bracket mentioned by Doug, The Neutral Safety Switch or the Reverse lights switch?

picture 3: but it also has two roller switches on the right front. One for reverse lights? one for Speed control?

I have no clue what model Jaguar this came from, probably 1989 XJ-S or Series 2 XJ-6.

Jose:

The XJS shifter is a bit different. It is intended to match the GM TH 400 transmission used with the V12. No NS and reverse light switch on the Th400. And, the GM detents are slightly different than those for thee BW's

One of the micros defeats Cruise action with the trans in neutral or Park!

The shifter in your pixture does not resemble the one I recall in my car. better stated, only slightly resembles. Yours an earlier or perhaps later Jaguar.

Carl..

The early Series IIIs I've worked on had a plunger type reverse light switch mounted to the left side of the gearshift quadrant, part number C1083 in the illustration below

Here's a better picture of the reverse light switch itself:

The plunger moves inward when the gearshift is placed in "R", closing the circuit. The one time I had a car with reverse lights stuck on, the plunger was stuck in the depressed position and wouldn't let go. Replacing it solved the problem. The switch screws into the shift quadrant and is adjusted by adding/removing shims. If you google "Jaguar C1083" you can see other pics as well

The later, transmission mounted switch looks like this:

It is adjusted by loosening the hold-down down screw and rotating/pivoting the switch. In some cases the hole where the hold-down screw need to be elongated to allow the switch to rotate/pivot.

Whether early switch or late switch, the wires colors should be green and green/brown on the reverse light switch

Personally, I've not seen the lever-arm microswitch used as a reverse light switch on a Series III XJ6....but that might just be me. It's always been the plunger style or the transmission-mounted style.

(However, the V12 cars DID use the lever-arm microswitch for the reverse lamps, at least all the V12s I've seen and owned.)

Cheers
DD
Doug,
I have removed the shifter case and there is no switch as you have shown.
Attach photos to show in my case.

In that sense, where would my 1985 XJ6 S3 reverse switch be?

I see the switch clearly in the second picture

Carl, if not XJ-S Then it has to be Series 2 XJ-6. I had never seen a shifter assembly without the Speed Control OFF-ON-RESUME switch. Unless it's XK-E.

Jose, you mean you've seen the switch in the second photo of those I recently posted?

I was searching for the one Doug posted as the one which is the reverse switch.

I will change the while shifter tomorrow to see if the reverse light will go off, if it does, I will then service the original fitted one and keep as spare for future.

yes Mike, that is what I meant. The roller switch is shown in the second picture, in front of the shifter bracketry.

Now whether that roller switch controls the reverse lights in a 1985, that is a different story. If it doesn't, then the reverse lights switch is on the left side of the transmission.

The round roller switch was used on earlier models, the reverse light switch on your car is pictured above, its on side of transmission where linakge is.

Aye, Aye, on my 83, it was on the left side of the transmission.

As the BW 66 departed, I had two options to get reverse lights.

1. Usa an XJS entire tower. I did that.

2. Looking at MIkega's bottom picture, on can see the micro swith at the front of the shift tower.
And, a spacer to the left of it. Remove spacer, install a second micro swith. connect the wires to it...

So, here,, look down and under. jaguar mantra. clean tighten, here already lubed, I suspext!!
