86' Series 3 speaker upgrades
Hi all!
So ive recently installed a new stereo header after getting tired of the stock sound (besides the upgraded door speakers)
and while it sound much better due to the fact the door speakers are so small the bass tends to drown out the treble and doesn't like to be turnt up too loud
so i was wondering what the best options are here and anyone's experiences
Install amp?
Sub woofers?
Cut holes behind back seats and try to wire up some 6x8 speakers? let me know what you all think thanks!
Extra info :
Header im using: JVC KD-X370BTS
current door speakers : pioneer G-series

if you remove the sound insulation covering located exactly under the rear parcel shelf in the trunk, you will see that the factory formed 6 x 9 speaker "shapes" that can be cut out very carefully for extra speakers. Then the trunk becomes a large Bass cabinet.
You will also need to remove the parcel shelf covering inside the car, and that means removing the two seat belt reels, the 3 plastic screws, and the rear seat.
Or you can mount angled 6 x 9 speaker boxes directly over the rear parcel shelf but you will not get much Bass out of those because they have no "air" to move.
also keep in mind that the radio head itself needs to reproduce Bass frequencies in the 20 hertz range. Some radios start at 40 hertz so those don't produce much bass no matter what speakers.you have.
To explore under the rear parcel shelf, you need to lay on your back in the trunk and look up where there is a black cardboard cover with Yute insulation on the other side.
in my 1984 XJ it can be removed carefully by pushing it towards the rear seat wall, then bending the front out from under the metal panel and pulling it down. Then you can see the 6 x 9 shapes on the metal shelf.

Check out post #4 in the thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...stions-239601/ for the underseat powered subwoofer approach the iramphal and I are using.

When I did my car about 3 years ago, I replaced the four door speakers, added two 6x9s on the rear deck and a self powered sub woofer under the passenger seat
6x9 on parcel shelf
self powered sub under passenger seat
front passenger seat all the way back. 6 inch speakers on rear door
Pioneer head unit with all the bells and whistles.

Hello Sanchez,
Many thanks for this informative post. I intend to copy the system you have. I have already replaced all door speakers with brand new and more modern Pioneer ones. The sound has improved but not much bass. I have also purchased a pair of 6X9s which I would like to fit under the parcel shelf as you did and I intend to get myself a new self powered woofer to place under the passenger seat. But one question, if I may, did you wire all door speakers and the two 6X9s straight to your head unit or did you use an amplifier to power the 6X9s? Hoping to read you soon. Gerard.

@Jag7651: My Pioneer radio had 4 sets of regular speaker outputs LF;RF;LR; RR. In addition to that it had 3 sets of RCA outputs. I converted the OEM wires to the doors using shielded coaxial wires with plug in connectors (I got them from a company called Explicit Audio in my neighborhood). I wired the rear deck speakers from the left and right RCA outputs (40mhz) with an adapter to convert the RCA to shielded coaxial (BestBuy). The 3rd RCA output (20mhz) went to the self powered Sub Woofer (ALPINE PWE - S8).
You have the option of using round or oval speakers. I went with the oval shape because they were 3 way speakers.

Many thanks for your prompt response. The new Pioneer 6X9s I purchased are 3 way as well, just like yours. In my previous post I forgot to mention that I also bought a new Pioneer head unit to replace the existing outdated Pioneer one I have. This new one is smartphone compatible, bluetooth, usb and remote control, the works. The speaker connections for the 4 door speakers are all there but there only 2 sets of RCA output, 2 white and 2 red. I intend to wire one set RCA (with adapters) to drive the 6X9s and the other set to the under seat powered sub woofer. This should work ( I hope).

One set of RCA outputs to power both 6x9s will work. The only difference will be the ability to adjust the settings between the left and right 6x9s. using one set means whatever adjustment you make for the right channel will be the same on the left channel. Other than that it will sound great.

@Jag7651: When installing the Self Powered Sub Woofer do not run the power wires and the RCA cables together. Run the power cables on one side of the tunnel and the RCA on the other side. If run together you will get audio interference.
Unless you have something like this.
This is a twisted pair Noise Shield Directional RCA cable. This you can run alongside your power wires with no interference. This type of RCA cable uses 3 tightly twisted conductor bundles +, - and signal drain per channel to create a directional noise cancelling architecture.
