86 XJ6 S3 Cruise Control NoGo and Iffy Speedometer
While addressing some of my to do list on my 86 XJ6, my next possibly related issue seems to be a sometimes working speedometer and a never working cruise control. The speedometer will work on occasion, but not for too long. Sometimes it bounces up to my current speed and back to zero, sometimes working properly, and sometimes not at all. From my understanding, it is an electronic signal. For some reason it works better when it is cooler outside..on hot days it usually doesn't budge.
The CC doesn't work at all, even when the speedometer is working. I checked the fuse and it seems OK. Does this sound like the CC ECU as well as a bad speedometer transducer? Any and all help is appreciated.
Future problems include a non working A/C, a sometimes working heater (inb winter), and the serious need for front end bushings...it rattles like a 6 month old baby!

Yes, the transmission mounted transducer is the most common culprit for speedo problems. Can't hurt to check wires and connections first.
Resealing the bellows is often all that's needed to bring the cruise control back to life but don't forget to check the 3 amp fuse and vacuum hose.
Lots of good cruise control info here:

Hello everyone,
I have a 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 and I would like to replace both the distributor cap and rotor. By the look of it the cap has never been renewed. I have purchased a suitable new cap and rotor from Britain. The new cap has got a couple of fixing screws and can be easily fitted to the distributor by using a normal flat head screwdriver. The problem is I cannot remove the old cap. The fixing brass screws have no slots for any sort of screwdrivers. The screws are fitted flush with the cap and there is only a tiny hole on each head. Do I need a special tool to remove the cap? Any help from someone would be greatly appreciated..........

Hi 7651
FWIW, I've been around a few Ser IIIs and what you've described isn't ringing any bells at all. Maybe they're Torx head or Allen head fasteners?
Others will chime in.
It would be best to start a new thread for this. You've tacked onto a totally unrelated thread.
Cheers and welcome aboard

Hi Doug,
Many thanks for your quick response. I registered this morning. Back to the distributor cap. The screws have no torx heads, this is for certain. Allen head screws? Possible, but that small? I have a complete set of Allen Keys so, I will give this a try for sure. I will let you know of the outcome. Once again, thank you for your help.
