Me thinks the issue is elsewhere. Two things jumped out at me. "if I set the timing correctly, it will not start". Added is "it pinged til I used a higher octane fuel".
Theory: The timing is not correct!!! The outer portion of the dampener has slipped and what appears to be a proper static setting is actually too far advanced.
Fix: Determine the "real" TDC and compare to what the pointer and dampener indicate. If not the same, the dampener has failed. Fix or compensate. Former preferable. Then, use the strobe to see if mechanical and vacuum advance is in spec.
If not, all other "issues" will be unclear.
That "baby steps first" thing....
Good luck on the hunt...

Hi all,
I am having this same issue!!
I recently replaced the cold start injector that was leaking gas. Since the fix the idle in drive has been really rough. I had checked to see if in my handy work I hadn't disturbed any of the wiring going to the fuel rail or any of the hoses located around the cold start injector and very thing seems secure and good.
Before the replacement of the leaking cold start injector the car ran fine, it would take some starting and need and good stamp on the gas to get it to fire but idling was fine! Since the fix it starts up really nicely but the idle runs low.
Any advice of how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!
