87 Jaguar XJ6 series 3
Taking a week end drive to look at a 87 XJ6 Vanden Plas series 3. What are trouble areas for these cars? What should I look for engine, trans issues? Rust? I've heard the 6 cyl are tank like. Are there any issues like to early 2000 XJ's? Any secrets to look out for? Thanks for any input or ideas you have for me. Hopefully the drive (5 hrs) will be worth it.
Thanks,
Larney

look for rust bubbling around the bottom of the front and rear windshields.
make sure the a/c works and gets cold, make sure the Heater works,
make sure the car has not been involved in any crash,
check the exhaust system for rust and perforations, raise the car on a lift to inspect the underside, xhexk for oil and fluid leaks,
check the headliner fabric to see if it is collapsing,
check to see if the Speed Control works (Cruise Control),
check the transmission to see if it shifts smoothly as it should.
check the electric sunroof to see if it opens and closes properly.
check the electric windows,
check the electric door mirrors,
check the speedometer and odometer, tachometer and all other gauges,
check the temperature gauge while driving in stop and go traffic,
check, check, check, deduct $500.-- for every deffect you find.
