Default ac/heater used to never shut off, now wint come o

Hello,

First, Id like to say thanks to anyone who can guide me a bit with my problem, This site has a lot of knowledgeable people.
I have had my 1984 xjs for few years, and the ac/heater never shut off. Temp control and airflow were adjustable and seem to work, but it would always be on low, just couldn't turn it off. It wont c ome on, but even in off you can tell the temp. control is working, so it seems its just a flow problem. I couldn't find any posts that addressed the 'WONT SHUT OFF" part, so I has hoping you had possibly seen this ocurance, or if they have anything to do with each other. please bestow all of your wisdom of the air condition system.

Thanks for your help!

do you mean the Fan or Fans will not go off?

it sounds like the On-Off "mode" switch was going bad and now is dead.

the "mode" switch is the one with the Off-Low-Auto-High-Defrost positions.

you said it more correct than I did. originally the fans wound just keep blowing, and you could adjust the lo/hi amount, it just would not shut off, so I suppose that's the fsns not shutting off. see what you are getting at with the switch, but this car has a v8 conversion, and I wasn't sure if there is a fuse before the fan/fans, or something like that in common with both problems.

BTW, I have four fuses in the car that are just there, they look to be original, but if here is a fuse that shuts off the fans, so they didn't burn up or something. please let me know. if you tell me there is nothing, ill dig into the switch and wiring. thanks for getting back so quick

a blown fuse would turn OFF the fans and if not replaced, the fans would not come ON.

try the S57 wiring diagram, download it free at my website:
Jag Upgrades Home

if that does not help you, try this website:

right, that's what happening now, originally, I always had airflow, couldn't shut it off. now, I have no airflow In any mode, now, it could be a fuse, I just didn't know if there was anything to link both problems, and since these fuses aren't labelled, I was hoping to find that one of them could be causing problems. I wouldn't think the fuse would have been the culprit originally, I was searching for something that would be common for both problems.

the fans not shutting off could be a bad switch or a misconnected switch.

The fans not coming on could be a blown fuse or a dead switch.

Difficult to diagnose without substituting the switch or looking for a blown fuse.

what year is the XJ-S ?

1985. I made sure all the fuses that installed are good regardless of where they go.
