When I saw your post, I went and had a look at my copy of Paul Skilleter's book "Jaguar Saloon Cars" published 1980. Series 1s came out in 1968 when air con was very uncommon in UK cars. Apparently only export cars ever received the air con, and it was a Delanair system specifically designed for the XJ saloons so that it fitted into the same space as the existing heating/ventilation system.
I would say you are going to find it very difficult to get the original unit due to the rarity of it in the UK. Fitting a unit out of a Series 2 is not possible, because Jaguar completely redesigned the heating and ventilation system due to complaints and the bulkhead was changed. At this point air con became a fitting on UK cars, and continued until the Series 3's finished in 1986 (V12s in 1992).

Having replaced every AC/heating piece in my S1 car(s), finding used parts is very hard today.
You should purchase a whole late model (72-73) S1 XJ with AC/heating and use the parts in your car. That way you would have all that is needed, even it does not work correctly or is broken. the later S1's have better fans and a PCB attached to the top of the evaporator.
I would have the heater matrix pressure tested at a radiator shop, check the evaporator innards with pressure. The plastic nipples behind the radio
can be fixed or converted to modern stuff. I would install a new expansion valve before buttoning up the dash area from the install. New AC lines
can be made by any competent AC shop.
You can make the car have good AC performance by upgrading the condenser to modern stuff, adding two center vents for increased airflow
and getting rid of the vacuum lines that ran the heater and AC controls.
