Adjust Gear Selector

Adjust Gear Selector
Hello all,
I have a question about the BW66 auto box as fitted to my XJ6 S3. Every since I have had the car to select Drive I have had to move the selector down past D and then back up to D to get the car to engage gear. All the other gear positions are fine just D is misbehaving. Is this likely to be a problem that can be fixed by adjusting the selector or am I up for a bigger repair?

I suggest down loading the Jaguar Shop Manual for the S3 and look in the "Transmission-BW66" area. Check the cable connections from the trans shift shaft all the way to the cable connection at the quadrant shift lever under the center console. It will also outline how to adjust the cable correctly. The manual can be down loaded from some members (I forget who) on this Forum or from the interweb. Divide and Conquer.

It has been a long time, since I visited the region where the cable meets the shift lever of the transmission.
But, the cable is a wire than travels in a housing. It is very important that the housing be secured
at each end. And, that the housing be clear of any chaffing internally.
Failure of any can cause a no shift or odd shift into any of the positions.
Check those attachment points for the housing to make sure they are secure.
There is a crimp at the end. If the housing slips away from thee p, odd thigs will happen.
Check on them.
Beware of cable stress when parking against a curb or bump stop...
Or, you might just have to do a preemptive cable replacement...
