AJ6 engine into XJC ( XJ6 series 2 )
Hi,
I am about to start ( when I find a engine and manual gearbox) a transplant of a 4.0 litre AJ6 engine into a 1977 XJC, I have read up on this and it appears that all I need is XJS engine mounts and to swop the exhaust to the other side .
Has anyone on her actually done this, and are there any other problems I might encounter ?

Now that is the kind of engine upgrade I can relate to ! Keeps a Jaguar engine in the car and could be considered something Jaguar themselves would have done if the AJ6 had come along a lot earlier than it did. It certainly needed to, as the old XK lump was way past it even in the 70s.
Jaguar made a huge error of judgment with engines in the late 60s, by pursuing the V12 and not thinking about the engine they needed to fit in the majority of the cars. Of course this was the AJ6 first put into the XJS, but only really started to be used in quantity in the XJ40 of 1986, a decade too late, really.

XJC transplant
I looked at the possibility of an aftermarket ECU, but the cost put me off, plus the time and problems to get it working, it seems that the ECU will cost at least £600 and you need a Rolling road tune, minimum £400 so that means £1000 before you start,
I emailed the two big manufacturers here in the UK , one never bothered to answer and the other gave a one line answer ' we could probably get that engine working with our ECU but not the auto gearbox' this to me means that if they are not interested when you are offering them money...well I dont feel you would get any support for their product afterwards, Plus when you go on their websites, it just seems to be people with problems. I emailed a guy on another forum who had tried the Megasquirt with a AJ16s and gave up ! Not a simple fix I fear
From Rich W on another forum: re AJ16 in series 2
What I was told is that it can take a 60 - 1 wheel fine, but ask
the code to figure out how many delay teeth there are to the crank
sensor and it doesn't like 0 or minus numbers, as it has to see a
number of teeth before the gap to provide a reference. I got told
with the 60 tooth wheel there needed to be around 10 teeth between
crank sensor and the missing tooth, and that for a 36 - 1 wheel it
would be 6 teeth.
I tried a number of ways, and it didn't work with the stock trigger
wheel. A friend has an AJ6 that didn't work with the 60 - 3 wheel
that engine has had the same issue. He put a 36 - 1 on it, set it
up as per the manuals, and it runs sweet as a nut.
And it will, no doubt. The most I had out for mine was a brief
cough but my knowledge of megasquirt systems wasn't sufficient to
sort it. I know now that the AJ16's toothed wheel has its missing
tooth at TDC, which the megasquirt system doesn't like... so an
aftermarket trigger wheel will likely crack it.
I then got a so called 'expert' to look mine over but he set all
the parameters up for a V8 XJR engine and the AJ16S went from a
cough to stone dead.
Like I said though, I know it can be done and I will try again at
some point. I wouldn't disssuade anyone from having a go if they
are more competant with aftermarket systems. I was using MS2 as it
handles the idle speed control of the AJ16 - though I had fitted an
XJS distributor as it kept the coil and meant no tacho modification
to the S1 or its wiring.

The ECU issue was security. The XJR has a chip in the ignition key,
which is read by the security module, and unless evrything checks
out with another module the ECU won't crank the engine or fire the
injectors. You can get round the cranking issue by wiring the
starter directly, but it still won't supply fuel.
I gave a 4.0 XJ40 15CU ECU a shot and it did run the engine, though
very badly. If there were anyone out there capable of modifying the
maps in these you could probably get it running well as it started
readily enough.
I then tried megasquirt, but the AJ16 didn't like it running with
the stock sensors and trigger wheel. By this time I had got
depressed with the whole thing - so fitted the 3.6 to give my car
some life back.

XJC with XJR6 engine, An engine at last !!
Well it took 2 years looking on EBAY... buy I finally found an engine.
I actually managed to get an AJ16 XJR car ( auto) with multiple 'issues' but a 'good ' engine.
I had already found a Getrag 290 so... off I go !
Thinking of using the X300 servo and brake pedal as it has provision for a clutch pedal.
Will the LSD from this car fit the XJC rear axle ?
Going to contact Andy and see if he can sort me an ECU ,try it in the car , then pull it out and fit it in the XJC

Hi,

Has anyone on her actually done this, and are there any other problems I might encounter ?

Use the six banger from a salvaged late 4.0 XJS. XJS was based on XJC and has similar dimension, wiring harnesses, A/C components, mounts, engine, transmission, rear diff will all fit. Guess how I know. What ever you pay extra up front for an XJS you will save 5x on the back end.

I remember it being in a UK car magazine article in the early yo mid-nineties, but can neither remember the mag or the month/year it was published.
The search continues...

As far as the exhaust, I am going to take the original center catalytic converter and flip it
up side and reconnect exhaust as needed. If I have lengthen or shorten, I will do on the engine side of the exhaust.
From Larry Louton. Who is co-writing a forum column with Dodgy about transplanting
a AJ16SC engine into a Series 3.
