Hi Aussie-series3
That sound like a good bargain at $500. I would go for it and worry about the speedo later.like Jtestrake fitted the GMT700R4 to his sreies 3 then to v12 there will be other options i will reserch further for you. I fitted the ZFauto and getrag mainly because of the type of buisness i own.
Hi Eric the XK engine is a good one i love my series one with tripple 2 in SU carb and s|3 hed i think they are about 165 or185 H/P as standard where as the AJ3.6 is 221H/P AS STD all so a lot lighter. I no the weight difference between the V12 is 90KGS heavier than the AJ6 The engine in the race car has done well over 320.000 kms and still going strong on hill climbs and track work. It is putting out 308 H/P with just bolt on goodies and nothing done internaly
Cheers RAY

ive thought about the turbo 700 but dont want to spend $500 on the adapters if i can get a more powerful engine and better auto for that lol. would be nice to keep the old xk in there though, but as it is it needs $500 spent replacing all the hoses, belts, waterpump and cleaning up the injection system.

how to the bolting paterns of the aj6 compare to the xk? will the zf fit the xk? i somehow doubt it but ive read that the aj6 block is based off the xk, dont know how much truth is in that but then again it bolts in the same!

im really wondering weather i should bother replacing all the bits on the xk or just stick an aj6 in there for not much more. i know ill probably end up spending much more by the time its in there but anyway. might just press the pump apart and replace the seal for now and risk a hose bursting while i decide what to do with it. at least if i cooked it ide have a good reason to replace it.......i couldn't do it tho, i have too much respect for the motor and its technology lol

if the zf dosnt have a cable provision does it have a speed sensor on the 3.6 or was that always in the diff. i wonder if i could mount something on the yoke at the back of the engine and mount some sort of hall sensor to it?

ill have to get another job and save up some money before i go too far into it, being unemployed is much better for me, but it means the poor old jag suffers lol

thanks,
jay

Hi the bolt pattern on the BorgWarner model 66 auto box on the sreies 3 is completly different to the ZF HP 22 ON THE aj engine . the series 3 has the starter motor on top right hand side where as the AJ has the starter motor at top left hand side. you would need a special adaptor made up.
Bothe the XJS3.6 and XJ40 have the speedo pick up on the diff but done differently.
I guess some thing could be machined up to work nothing is impossible.

this spedo issue looks like it may be a problem. i converted my 1972 holden ute to a 5 speed manual and havent yet hooked up a spedo in that, but thats much easier then what this sounds like. i do without in that because i have no desire to do the legal speed, im happy cruising 10 k's below but a jag is a highway machine and i dont want to be doing 120 down the freeway.... are there any alternatives that dont involve opening and modifying the diff?

its a shame there isnt just a 4 speed that will bolt strait to the xk.....

regards jay

I appreciate that this is an old thread but........I just picked up a 1975 XJ 5.3 V12 Coupe and I absolutely don't want the V12.

It hasn't run in decades and I don't have the energy or will to bring it back to life, plus it's a complicated, finicky beast.

I have the opportunity to buy a running 1996 AJ6 engine with the matching transmission for peanuts and I was wondering how difficult it would be to swap that newer drivetrain into my 75 coupe.

Any insights would be most appreciated, thanks.......

In my opinion, if the v12 rotates freely it would be easier to get it running again than going through the engine swap.

There is plenty information available on this forum I recommend taking a look around.

I have a car that was AJ6 swapped. It is pretty straight forward for an engine swap. Going for an earlier donorcar with mechanical 4hp22 transmission will save you a lot of wiring.
