Alternative, Complete Ignition System that replaces Lucas & Marelli
Yes, I promise I searched for answers within the forum on this topic, as well as spent tons of time on Google researching it
I’ve done a ton of research on the stock ignition systems for Jaguar V12 engines of all years, and I feel like I’m starting to understand the subtleties between them, and how they work.
I just purchased a 1993 XJS V12 5.3, and of course it has the Marelli ignition system.
The car ran fine up until last year, has always been garaged, and is in very good condition for its age with no rust.
After sitting for the past year however she'll turn over, but not start, which I'm ok with, not a big deal.
I'm a bit of a lunatic, and I'm very big on throwing everything including the kitchen sink at a car when I become its owner. I'm a big believer in "let's just start fresh" without trying to nickel & dime things by using old parts or hoping that 30 to 40 plus year old hardware will still function correctly.
I have no problem replacing just about everything under the hood regarding the fuel/ignition system including new injectors, plugs, wires, fuse boxes, ECU, distributor, coils, water temperature sensor, sending units, etc., etc., etc., etc. (whatever it takes)
Is there, or is there not, an aftermarket ignition system that would replace all, or most, or at least some of the more problematic components of the Marelli system?
I could be persuaded into replacing the Marelli system with a proven, modern Lucas system, as long as it will "actually work".
Yes, I've read up on and seen the pictures of the potting/epoxy Marelli distributer fix, but I'd like to avoid that if I can by finding a modern, reliable ignition system that works as it should with solid electronics that won't fry themselves or require constant maintenance.
I can remove the cats because here in Connecticut, anything over 25 years old is off the DMV's radar. I don't even need a title to register the damn thing.
What I’m looking for is a system that was made by a company that realized there is a fortune to be made by making an ignition system for a Jaguar V12 that actually works that is not affiliated with Lucas or Marelli.
I’ve searched until my eyes have washed over and I haven’t found anything, but that doesn’t mean that one doesn’t exist somewhere out there.
Any & all replies & comments are welcome, thanks in advance gang…..
