one more question, didn't want to start a new thread. would a battery that is garbage and wont hold a charge cause the car to overheat? I just did a thermostat and gasket with new antifreeze and all was good. let the car sit for a couple months, had to jump it with one of my other cars and when I finally got it started it overheated bad. oil level is fine, not milky, same with antifreeze. thanks in advance

No, engine should cool soley on actual rotation of the water pump and mechanincal fan. Even it the engine was dieseling with no voltage anywhere it should still cool.

I'd make sure the cooling system is full and blead free of air and make sure the mechanical fan is moving air. Also common for radiator to get clogged over time.

I've seen that buying a fuel pump for a BMW E28 does the trick. I'm on my third pump now since I got my car. First Lucas pump (original I'm assuming) was leaking, second generic (Autozone) pump became very noisy due to debris coming from the left tank. I have now bought a German made pump. So far so good.

Ok thanks guys, looks like ill be redoing the cooling system, and thanks oliver for the link! I'm gonna drain the radiator and flush it, put in a new t-stat and if that won't solve it, water pump and hoses. This car loves sucking my wallet dry but its been a fun project

I strongly recommend fitting some kind of filter BEFORE the pump on the suction side. It will save you burning through pumps if you have any debris in your tanks (likely!).

I see the link I posted, they're out of stock, but the idea was to show you which pump is compatible as very few stores have the old Jags on their system.

I do plan on using filters on the suction side, going to town today to pick some up. just waiting for the fuel pump to arrive. I drained out the tanks and ran about half a gallon through each side. a good couple ounces of rust came out. I think I found out why I've been burning through pumps haha

I like the idea and makes sense to install a filter in each line for each tank. What filter, Part number would have the 1/2" IN and OUT. I'm having the same issues with my neighbor's 1986 XJ6. Fuel pump wasn't running and by julting it several times with 12 Volts was able to get it running but it doesn't pump. Ordered a new Carter pump from Amazon (NEW) 160.00Dollars. But some company's require that the screen filter be replaced for the Pump to be warranted. Where is this screen? Thanks Challanger51

The fuel screens are in the tanks themselves....but pre-pump inline filters accomplish the same thing

Ok Thank You did look at the 33248 MESH Filter 1/2'' in and out. will do that. Went over to Baldwin Filters, was going to put the bowl type, but want to make this job as simple and not have problem also for neighbor's XJ6.

The 33248 looks good to me. Good find!

Baldwin filters are very good. They probably offer the same thing as the 33248.

Pretty sure I have a couple of Wix 33248 filters sitting around that I'm not going to use. Let me know if you want them. Otherwise they're going on eBay one of these days...

I kinda think that there is a middle ground of understanding. Electric pumps don't suck very well. they are pushers. That is why they are mounted in the tank or very close and at the same level as the tank out fitting or lower!!

In our Jaguars. the tank to pump feed is pure gravity. Most filters should do just fine there. Although, at the moment, a ceramic unit would seem just great.

However, a clean tank is a virtual must. Lottsa ways to get there. I am leary of the chemical liners. If a good bond isn't established, it merely adds material to plug stuff up.

When I was messing with my LT1 install, I thought I heard the pump. OK, things are getting there. Naah, twas merely the radio antenna going up!!

My ears are not any good. so, I can't tell anyone what kind of noise a proper pump makes, if any!!

Walbro is an old quality maker of fuel stuff. I've used their fuel pumps on old critters just fine. and, lo and behold, when I was working on my chipper/shredder, who made the carb for the old Tecumseh one banger, , Walbro!!

All in all, when kept free of goop, the Jaguar fuel system seems quite good.

Thanks, but I ordered 4 last night from Amazon the Mesh 33248 @ 6.00 each, 1/2" inlet and outlet.
