Default Best way to pull a starter on an '87 XJ6

I need to replace the starter on my '87 XJ6, 4.2 litre. I have heard rumors you have to lift the engine to do that. What's the truth and does anyone have good suggestions?

Thanks for the input.

I'm in the process of changing all the ancillaries on my 1997 XK8 due to an engine change, the engine is out of the car on a bench and I had to remove the engine mounting bracket to get at the top bolt holding the starter on so it's probably the same on your car.
