Birkshire Automobiles- Please Avoid This Place!
#21
For the record the motor was provided by Birkshire themselves, and the invoice had "6 month warranty on engine" written on it. There were no foot notes to say that a head gasket was not covered. When it says "engine" that to me means the "engine" in its entirety. The part that really upsets me is that I gave Birkshire over $10000 business in less than six months, and they had no remorse that the engine that they provided me, failed within 150km. Sam said it so matter of fact, that head gaskets fail and that I'd have to fork up another $5000 to fix the problem again. His warranty was bogus.
Unfortunately this couldn't of happened at a worse time for me, as I have other things going on in life right now that would prevent me from having the time to start a legal battle against his garage. Thank you Bmb7t, I had a feeling it would go something like that. I actually sold the car to a collector today, at a tremendous loss I might add. The gentleman that purchased my car already has two XJ12's, so I know it went to a good home. What is really sad is that I wanted an XJ12 ever since I was eight years old, it has always been my dream car. Hopefully one day I will be able to purchase one again...

Definitely avoid
I had the worst experience, they are all about billing not what best for the customer. They refused to replace just the faulty part, instead wanted to do the whole unit. $30 vs $2K. They said the policy is do the whole unit, it was an absurd statement.
I brought my LR3, mentioned there is a leak on the suspension drier. I had taken the cover off for them already. They wanted to run diagnostic anyway for $125. Then I got a call, that they need to change the whole compressor unit for near 2K. When I arrived, the mechanic was pointing to the drier and calling it compressor. The leaking drier cap can be bought for $30-$40, the whole drier for $100, which would fix the leak but they refused to address that part, claimed they only do the complete compressor+drier unit. They were taking advantage of the fact the car was towed there and believed I was at their mercy. Obviously, I did not want to pay 2K when I can get the fix for under $100, the service manager got really rude, when I did not want the job done for 2K. He demanded the day rental keys, pay bill now and take the car immediately. I took the car, paid the diagnostic charge, gained no value just aggravation. Later, I temp fix I applied $10 epoxy at the drier, that fixed the issue, the car was drive able again. Dogged a 2K bill. This not a typical independent shop, they lack the know how, customer service skills, actually you are better off at a dealer, not much difference in their hourly rates.
Seemed like very dishonest bunch.

Bmbt 7t, This was quite a useful post from someone that has been through the mill. I would pursue the claim. I cannot support the implied abuse of Jaguars vs Toyotas. We are talking OLD vehicles. Jaguars currently enjoy VERY high ratings- even better than Toyotas. Who wants to own drive old Toyotas?

I'm not disputing your choice. But, I do understand the dealer's point. In this case of not swapping out dryers and compressors separately. Do both at a time. Were the compressor to fail next, they would take the blame. Eliminate call backs, a shop axiom.
I suspect you got lucky...
