Ashdowns want $460 for a 65 amp or $535 for a 80 amp. I can get the 65 amp for $185 from another local supplier, he is looking into a 75 amp for me. Just waiting for the call back.

It's absolutely astounding what one can learn from !
Aussie car slang: Car News | CarsGuide
The Holden Commodore gets several mentions such as Commodore which is alternatively Dunny Door, Bomb-a-door and Commode.
Makes Perfect sense!

I talked to a mate this morning who put a 65amp Baxters alternator in his HJ V8 with air con and he said it all worked well, he gave me the part number.
I went and picked one up from the local Baxters.

Baxters - The driving force in automotive solutions

When I got home and opened the box the label an the plastic bag said 70 amp, cool. On further reading of the specs it was rated at 80 amps so I called Baxters and they confirmed it is indeed 80 amp out put but sold as a 65??

All installed ok and ran the extra cable from the alternator to the positive post on the battery.

It is running at a bit above 13 volts(14.24 on multi meter) at idle, but drops to around 12 volts(13.3 on Multi meter) when air is on. It will come back up when rpm's rise.

James & Grant, thanks for the phone calls. Much quicker conveying information by phone.

Thumbs up

Got stuck in peak hour traffic tonight, it took nearly two hours to travel 4 km(so mostly not moving). Lights on the whole time, volt meter never dropped below 12.5 on the gauge so really running at around 13.5 at idle with lights on. Sweet.

Now the reason for being stuck in the traffic. My sons Soccer training finishes at 5pm so if he is quick we can be on the free way and home by 5.15 beating the 5pm finishers from the city.

When he got in the car I turned the key and no go, so up with the bonnet and a quick dig around came up with nothing obvious. Tried the key again and same result so off to the boot and grab the jumper leads and connect one end to the +ve terminal on the battery and disconnected the +ve wire from the relay to the solenoid (I put a connector 1/2 way long this wire when I first got the car so I could test the starter without digging around under the carby's should this situation ever arise).

Turned on the key and touched the jump lead on the wire and away she goes. Drove home and tried it in the garage, started as it should so my weekend job now is check the terminals and wiring at the ignition switch and relay. More than likely corroded terminal or loose connection.

That 5 minutes later getting moving cost me 1 & 3/4 hours in **** traffic I rarely get to deal with.

o1xjr:

1. I wired in something like that. A starter relay bypass. The original tin can jaguar starter relays are known to be quirky. Some open the can and clean the contents. Others, like me , go to a generic Bosch type of 40 amp or so capacity.

2. For some fun and a tad of education. Make a patch cord for your VOM Use the cigar lighter outlet, now better known as a power outlet. Read volts under various RPOM and load conditions in real time as you go. The Jaguar unit on the dash is known to be a bit sluggish.

3. Nice unit.

4. The word fun gets past me!! Except for the one that got past the censor. Same in any language, I think!!

It's working fine today. Just need to poke around in the wiring when I get a chance. Most of the wiring and connectors are like the air con wiring you fixed last week(dodgy at beast ) or the 42 year old originals.

Good to hear

Yeah like you said maybe have an eyeball around the starter motor circuit and see what she looks like. You might find a crimp connector half on or a corroded connection and.... if in doubt, swap it out!
