color schemes
Hi all,
I'm fixing up an 84 series 3 sovereign for a daily driving vehicle.
But it's got a little bit of rust, however for me, that's easy to cut out and replace the steel. Most blacksmiths and boilermakers can
Once done, I've got to respray. So I was thinking... Do I want it blue (paint code JDM) or should I go black, red, white or I don't really know. And as for the interior, carpets can change color and reupholster? Going to do anyway.
I'm removing the original timber veneer on the dash, because it's pretty much had it and I'm replacing it with Huon pine, the entire panel, not just the veneer, and getting that French polished. The section that holds the trip computer and some buttons is also going to be solid timber, french polished.
So, what color scheme would you use if you could just do it?
All the leather is fine, so it will become patterns and my mate who sews leather as part of his job will stitch the second set properly after I use the first lot and try it for myself.
The carpets are in spot on nick, and the floor liners have no tears, but I'll replace the backing insulation. And I can make any carpet any color I want.
All trims.... You get the idea,
Now I'd appreciate yours
Thanks

I just had my XJC painted black. Started with the driver's side only as that's all I could afford at the time and... I wanted to be able to compare putting the door and windows back together to the second side. Also... I know myself. If I bite off more than I can chew at a time, the project will NEVER get done. Anyway - I toyed with black above the waist line and deep cherry below. Didn't do it though. Biscuit interior. Very sharp!

Car #92/100, Black Cherry, is now in a collection in Beijing. I could not find a buyer in North America; the Chinese buyer saw it at a Concours in Vancouver. I sold it for just one reason: to make room for my XK.
And I have only one yellow car, my 1966 Mk 2 in the original Pale Primrose colour, 25,000 original miles. Fun in a 50 year old way.

Hi all,
Thanks for your input.
But I'm very heavily leaning towards black cherry. Still unsure about the interior though.
Sov211, that sounds like a yellow car should be, lots of fun!
My car currently blue, paint code JDM and I agree that it will drop the value to many, but this isn't about resale or such. Plus I'm the sort of guy who doesn't just spray as is, I remove doors, panels, windows, trims and all prior paints down to the shiny stuff then build it back up layer by layer.
Inside the engine bay is more difficult though, but with the head coming off, I'll still be able to get the color where needed, just it may not be as neat as the outside.
And seats, carpets and so forth are all going to be out at the same time. Coincidence?

the interior will be a costly redo, if not one big ripoff, regardless of color. Why? Only the tops of the seats are in leather, the REST is vinyl. Yes, Vinyl. But sellers charge an arm and a leg for it.

Just my two cents.....
You don't own a black car. It owns you.
I like my cars looking sharp and have always been willing to put forth a fair bit of effort to keep 'em that way....but black is just too much for me. I've owned two black cars and all I can say is "Never again". Those cars wore me out.
Mind you, both my black cars were subject to all the rigors of daily, year-round use. Blazing sun, pouring rain, mud-slinging winters. A car living ...um...." a more rarified existence".....would be much less labor intensive.
As an aside I'll mention that seeing *any* Jaguar owned by Gregory is a real treat. His level of enthusiasm and dedication in keeping a car in perfect condition makes me look like an absolute slacker !
Cheers

You got that right, Doug!! Nix Owns me, I freely admit it, but I'm a willing participant in that arrangement!
I look at that as Bonding time; very relaxing for me; a time when I can shut the rest of the world out, and it's just her and me.
Nix is actually the first BLACK car I've owned that Isn't a true daily driver but I kept all of them looking spiffy. She lives in that "more rarefied existence" you mention, of good weather and dry roads. For daily pounding, fording creeks and braving liquid atmosphere, I have the Barely Adequate Vehicle, Sonata.
