Roger, one detail to keep in mind if you use a compact donut spare: Since my car is a Series 3, I had to get a Series 2 spare tire Holdown which is shorter than the one used by the Series 3 and has a Handle which the Series 3 does not have. To loosen the 22mm nut of the Series 3 holdown, one uses the lugnut wrench that comes in the jack bag or the optional Toolkit, so you are already a step ahead since yours is a Series 2.

Naah, Darren is probably safe. Helium is inert. No worse than shipping one filled with Nitrogen.


But, if it was hydrogen, yowee.

I decided to help Roger and LnrB so I pulled my donut spare and made a template of the center hub and lugnut spacing. Armed with this template and offset measurements, I went to one You-pullit yard after confirming they had enough modern Jags to check for donuts. Guess what? Not one donut, and the last car I checked has a locked trunk so I could not see if there was a spare, and I have no pry bar. What I did see were two versions of the foam insert for the jack and its tools, all missing one tool or another, one type is a half circle, the other a full circle. They both look like cheap Ford parts, even the jacks look like Ford jacks, very tacky. Merry Christmas!

According to you the XJR wheel fits your car... it should fit my Series 1 XJ as well.

Those foam "tool kits" interest me in keeping all the stuff together without rattles.

After I get a wheel, I can see what hold down bolt I need.. I have one from a '85 Sovereign as well as the S1. Should be able to make one fit!

I am sorry I mentioned "shipping"... what I meant was the cost to get one here to find out it did not even fit my car!! Not the weight or even the actual cost.

DUH!!!


Helium is lighter than air. Therefore a tire filled with Helium "weighs" less than one filled with air.


As shipping cost calculations include weight, the shipping company gets shorted ?


Why should any one have an issue with Darren or any other so ingenius???


Helium certainly costs more than air. So a Helium filled tire is more valuable than one filled with air. If value is an element in the cost to ship, an issue? Nope, same answer, or is it?

ok Carl, I will start shipping tires with helium !. Roger, you are welcome. I noticed LnrB hasa Series 3 Kent wheel for a spare, and XJ-40 Teardrop wheels, like me, but in her Series 2. My XJ-R donut, Series 5 or 6 ?, fits my Series 3 perfectly, so thisis one of those where A equals B and C, and D and E equals A, then B and C equals D and E. I also compared the template I made of my donut to the full size spare XJ-40 wheel I still have, the hubs are identical, so yes, a much later donut will most likely fit your Series 1.

I, too have XJ 40 tear drop wheels --- so the later model compact spares should fit my car as well.


Will find one and get it on the way with the foam tool kit. That will finish off my trunk area for now.


Thanks for the extra work in fitting the spare!

LnrB and Roger, there is no Jaguar wheel more Jaguar-looking than a Teardrop wheel. Even Ford liked it and copied it for the Mercury Marquis. It just dawned on me: David Boger, he might have donuts and he can test for fit !

Default Later jacks fit differently

I found out from another Jag member that the later "X" jacks fit into a square hole on the sides of the cars... no round post sticking out like our early cars.

Using that later jack would mean drilling a large enough hole on the top square piece for it to fit our cars... plus the lug wrench fits the later lug nuts = probably our XJ40 teardrops lugs.. really no downside except for one hole to be drilled! I cannot imagine Jaguar using another size lug nut or wrench that close together in years.

my 1984 has those posts that extend down on each jacking point. The round end of the post goes into a hole at the top of the pivoting jack bracket.

Default Have a compact tool kit on order

Will confirm the lug wrench fits our teardrop lug nuts and that the jack can be modified to fit the older jacking posts on our earlier cars.


Have my eye on a compact spare...


More little things on my To Do List planned for today!

Roger, in my old S type, the full size spare is placed upside down in the compartment, then it is held in place with its holdown, which is similar to the model 420 and Series 1 and 2 holdown. Then the round Toolkit case is placed over the edges of the 15 inch spare wheel and the case itself is sort of countersunk into the wheel depth so it stays put. The attached picture shows it and you can also see how similar the classic S type boot is to the modern XJ boot.I am saying this because if you plan to use the half or full circle foam attachment for the jack, it might have to be placed first, then the spare on top, then the holdown through both, unless the Series 1has a secondary floor recess where the offset outer hub of a donut spare can fit. The S type has that recess to accomodate the outer hub of its wire wheel spare. Phewww! What a speech !
