Default Component Panel and Lock Relay Access?

I have a right passenger door that won't lock (solonoid) and the window doesn't work. All other door locks and windows are fine,.
I'm having trouble identifying where the diagram is pointing when it shows things like:
Lock Relay - looks like it could be in the back of the engine compartment or to the right of the glove box.
Component Panel - looks like it could be left of the glove box or behind it
So:
  1. Can anyone tell me where to find the Lock Relay and, if it's behind the dash, a general idea as to how I get in there?
  2. Same question for the Component Panel. (I've searched on how to get inside the dash, but I'm not having much luck ..)?
I'm a newbie, and this is my first experience with a Jaguar. It's not my Daddy's Oldsmobile but it looks and rides so much better...

To access to left and right component panels the under-dash trim panels must be removed. These are the panels with the little fuse box doors. Here's a picture:

These are attached with 3 or 4 screws. Two of the screws are hidden behind the plastic end caps at the extreme ends of the dashboard. The end caps are likewise attched with screws.

As for the lock relays (plural), they're behind the "kick panel" in the right and left foot wells. The panels have a metal retainer at the bottom edge. Loose (don't remove) the two small screws on the metal retainer. You'll find an additional screw holding the kick panel to body. With that screw removed you can wriggle the panel upwards and away from the metal retainer.

I'll add that all the locks work off the same relays.....so a problem with just one lock can't be a relay problem.

Cheers

Window doesn't work:

90% of the time it's just a problem with a switch. And of that 90%, 99% of the time the switch just needs to be cleaned. The internal contacts get oxidized. Lots of info in the archives. Easy to do

Doug is the expert. I would guess it’s just luck with the two problems being in the same door. We have all cleaned our window switches, do it once for all your windows switches and your good for another decade or so.

If it was me, I'd first clean the window switches. Quick and easy. Then I’d pull the door card and see if the solenoid in the door that pulls the little rod is getting juice before I started pulling the under dash panels.

If the solenoid is not getting juice I'd pull the kick panel (on my ’79 the lock relay is behind the passenger side kick panel) and see if that is getting juice there. If that’s ok, then pull the under dash panel.

For that, to put Doug’s instructions into my simple vocabulary, you may need to remove the big panels right over your knees. First you open the door and look at the oval plastic caps on the end of the dash, two screws and they pop off. Then below that are little plastic pieces that go from the oval end caps down to the knee panel. Two screws you get to from the bottom. Then for the knee panels there are a couple screws on the top edge (closest to the seats). Then the knee panels wiggle out.

More tidbits

Sometimes wonky electric locks can be brought into full operation by simply lubricating the linakges.

The lock solenoid position is adjustable fore-and-aft. This adjustment can sometimes compensate for a slightly tired solenoid that loses some of its "throw".

Default Thanks

I can’t thank you enough for the quick responses and great pointers.
I’ll take a crack at cleaning the switches - getting at them is much easier than pulling the dash - and report back.
I have other electrical issues - cigarette lighter doesn’t work, radio is dead - so the dash diagram is very useful. (not to mention a new resource - parts.jaguarlandrover.com.)
I’ve got lots of questions - I’ll be back…

Default Window “Fixed”

I’ve been under the console and pulled the switches on the ski slope - apparently I accidentally cleaned the switches because the passenger window suddenly works.

I’m confused about the door locks because the drivers rear door lock is now stuck in the unlocked position. It worked yesterday, but not today. Weirdly, I was able to lock/unlock manually by sitting in the back seat. Now it’s stuck unlocked and won’t budge. I assume that means I have to take the door panels off so I can check the actuators, etc.

Got a reference or general tips for how to remove the right front and left rear door panels?

What year (or series) is your XJ6? It's different for the three series.
