fairly sure i am dealing with a vacuum line below the manifold but has a grimy fuelly smell, has (along with another at the other end) been capped.
am assuming it needs to be link to the tube link in the second picture, according to the book.
am I going right or wrong?
That hose in the 2nd photo, with the black/white valve, looks like the brake booster vacuum hose. It should run from the brake booster to a port on the underside of the intake manifold. It probably does not matter which port, but on my SII engine it goes to the port closest to the front of the car. You should check that one way valve to make sure it's working properly. Air should only be able to flow towards the engine, not towards the booster.
There are 3 or 4 ports on the underside of the intake manifold so that hose in the first photo is probably just one that is not in use as a vacuum source and has been capped. Might be worth renewing it to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. It might originally have been used for vacuum to the cruise control bellows or the hvac.
