Default Dayton wire wheels and tire sizes..

For anyone following my lump thread, you already know i scored a set of wire wheels, i know they are a fraction wider than the stock rims, which i currently have with 215 70 15 tires,, can i squeeze 225 70 15s on it with the wider rims or am i asking for rubbing issues??

Hi Darren,
Looking good ! How / what did you use to clean them, did they have some rust or just dirty ? I have a set I'm pulling from a parts car for possible use which have 215's so sorry I can't help you about the rubbing question.

Cheers,
Brian

the wider wheels will be no problem.

the HEIGHT of the 225 I am not sure for the XJ.

but the difference between 215 and 225 is small so it might not be a problem.

225/70's are IMO too large, particularly in height. I like 215/65s. There's a bit more room on the S3 than the S1-2 BTW.

Your wheels look like the earlier 60 spoke design, which was adequate for the lighter S1 SWB cars but gave trouble (often failed) on the heavier later XJs. Dayton "recalled" the 60 spoke wheels, allowing owners to replace them with 70 spoke wheels at cost. Both versions were 7 inch X 15, but the newer wheels were heavier, with more and thicker spokes. I've used the 60 spoke Daytons on my S1 cars for 40 years with no problems (except air leaks). But if your car is a S3 I would be careful. IMHO.

I am looking for a set of wheels (preferably cross spoked wires) for my 97 xk8..Currently have the original chromed 17 inch with 245-50-17 tires...I have a beautiful set of 19 x 9 inch mags but they are ford bolt pattern meaning I'd have to use adapters...unsure about clearance issues...any thoughts or someone have a set for sale?

the 1967 XJ prototype came with wire wheels and a E type rear third.

my 1965 S type has 225.70.15 and they rub on the front wheel openings even though it is a taller car than the XJ.

I just got a set of these wire wheels as well, just got tires mounted to them.

Haven't gotten them installed on the car yet, waiting for lugnuts to come in from ebay.

I still need to find the center cap 3 bar spinner for my wheels.

I went with the 215 personally.

Note that the early 60 spoke wheels require different caps than the later 70 spoke wheels. Earlier are smaller in diameter and mount with a single bolt. Later are wider and mount with two bolts. You can fit a real Jaguar spinner to either, but it's a bit of a hassle.
