Default Door locks

(I think we kiwis even say it as DORLOCKs sounding like Dr Who's foe)

found two green/orange/red striped wires which playing under the console (another Dr Who reference..!)
they seem to trigger the locks in either the back or front doors depending which one you send a charge too.
if I send a charge from an independent 11.5 volt battery it makes the locks in the door click (altho not consistently lock so they might be faulty)
but it I draw a positive 12.2 from the wires under the console (so sharing the car's ground/earth) I get a massive angry blue spark but no blown fuse and the door locks still click.
does this suggest a bad earth in one of the doors some where?
was the original trigger lock a momentary contact or a simple on/off? I assume the latter.
