Default engine oil dipstick tube seal

the cone-shaped seal located at the dipstick is shaped like a "cone", i.e., one end is wider than the other. I have three dipsticks, two with the same cone-shaped seals.

I started to look for new replacements and find the design has been changed to a "cylinder-shaped" seal which doesn't work in the dipstick tube, it simply does not stay in place and in fact, the dipstick is pushed out of the tube by itself in a matter of hours.

I checked with David at everyday XJ and he has the "new design" seals. Same with SNG Barrat and everybody else. I have the "new" seal too.

but it doesn't work. This must be a mistake in the Parts manual.

the original seal is a solid, cone-shaped rubber piece. The new seal is a hollow cylinder. ???

Anybody else came across this ?

Jose -

I just replaced mine and had the same thoughts. But mine seems to work fine. But I will walk out later and double check how firm it has stayed in the tube

You know after thinking about it I concluded ( probably incorrectly) that the original was cylindrical but that after years and years of heat on the bottom side that is in the tube and exposed... that it shrunk up and therefore appears to be tapered????

Will report back shortly

Randy

Randy thanks.

I thought the same thing but the new seal is hollow and the old tapered seal is solid.

to me the old one looks like one of those plugs used in plumbing to seal the sink's drain when filling the sink with water.

a rubber stopper, that's what the original dipstick seal is. They are available from many suppliers.

exactly, the tapered plug / seal. Just like in my dipsticks.

David told me he found two dipsticks also with the tapered seals, so it is obviously how they came from the factory.

that new seal design is terrible, I will not use it, I don't trust it.

Today I wrote to several tapered plug businesses with the measurements to see if they have High Heat Resistant plugs. One company offers them for 600 degrees F temps.
I will find them.

When I took chemistry in college they had similar plugs that fit in test tubes. My restored 87 has the tapered type and was replaced by the previous owner.

ACE hardware has an aisle of specialty hardware and they have a box of tapered plugs, but they are not heat or oil resistant and I would be afraid of one getting melted in the dipstick tube. Silicone would be nice.

Odd. Mine is the non tapered new style and when I went to check it, it was stuck in the tube. Ha ha... so anything can happen I guess!

I wonder how many owners are having this problem with the hollow seal.

I found a solid tapered silicone stopper that might work. Waiting for a sample, good for 600 degrees Farenheit.

Default Oil Dip Stick Seal/Stopper

I also have the tapered cone shape seal. I think it’s no longer sealing well, and a small amount of oil is leaking out past it. So, I’m searching for a new one.

same with mine, it has become brittle and also has shrunk. I am still looking for them but they have to be heat and oil resistant, they must be made of Neoprene at the very least. Silicone does not work, already tried it, it turned into chewing gum.
The substitute hollow seal sold by everyone does not work either.
