my 90 xj6 187000mi needs eng. If I strip the 96 can I use the running gear and accessories from the 96 without serious mods. The 96 hit a stump with LF wheel, warped unibody, rack and pinion broke and cracked oil pan. Some one borrowed the coil packs and plug wires in the storage lot, so I will have to buy them. 96 had been serviced regularly by jag of new orleans. What opinions does everyone have. Can the pan be welded, are packs and wires expensive, If I use the 96 eng do I have to Change the harnesses or just the cpu's and relays, AM I OUT OF MY MIND. Should I use the Dist out of the 90. Will the spedo head interchange?

Almost positive EVERYTHING has to be changed out. Possibly even the transmission. Emissions systems changed in the mid 90's. So even if the engine was a direct bolt in, things like the wiring, ECU, etc will need to be changed.
Also the trans may not be compatible with the new engine. Even if they bolt together, like the engine, the trans may need all new harness & TCU. If you do not mind ripping out the interiors of both cars & getting EVERYTHING, then by all means go ahead.
I have no idea if the engines between 90-96 are even remotely the same. I am just stating that if they are infact the same engine code & type eg...AJ16. The fact that they are of different "eras" will have a big impact on ease of installation.
You need to look at things like the fuel system..are the lines in the proper place, or do you need to fabricate more line? Is the 96 engine a returnless, type system fuel system? Is the fuel pump adequate? Is it a drive by wire or throttle cable system? If they are both throttle cable, will the cable reach & have the same attaching tab.
These are just a FEW of the questions you need to ask yourself. As this particular sub-forum, is for UP TO 1987 model year, you may not get much more help, except for the "post in the proper forum" response.

We were just talking about this and swapping drive trains between normally aspirated and supercharged similar years...and its all really foolish cause the prices on a nice one is cheaper and no headaches. I have a friend that just picked up a 97 xjr in damn near perfect condition for 6k. Theyre out there and worth it to pay alittle more. Sell yours or part it out and get what you want, pay the extra for a super nice 1
