I lived out that way for a few years. The speedway was great....and inexpensive....entertainment. I didn't know it had closed down....but I'm not surprised. I was last there circa 1993 and it was pretty run down.

Thanks for the link and the memories. Indeed, son and I attended more than a few on Saturday nights. Wore pants, definitely not shorts. splinters a plenty in the grand stands.


We left in 75 for NORCAL.


Some of that stuff rubbed off. Son raced some critters around here.
Sacramento, Liverrmore, Petaluma and points north. Built a few engines for fellow racers as well

Yes there are lot of great racing memories from that era. I mentioned Mt Tremblant / St. Jovite area - located just north of Montreal in the Laurentian Mountains where you could sit at track side near one of the hairpin curves and watch /hear/feel Shelby Cobra roadsters double clutch down to the correct gear then blast by. Not to be forgotten John Surtees in the T 70 Lolas and of course Jim Hall / Hap Sharpe and their 2 speed auto trans aluminum big block Chevies in their Chaparral open cars - 2D models I think they were. The Cobras were the most ferocious and greatest to watch as they accelerated out of the corner - long ago far away... great times great parties. Must be some good stuff on YouTube from that era

 

In the late '70's, I was working in the being built Ford Bridgend engine plant. We were to build the CVH four cylinder engine. The same engine was to be built in Detroit. So I spent quiet some time in Detroit, and all the Ford petrol engine plants. So to the point, I was allocated a Mercury Colony Park as my company run about. Now that was big for a little Englander! Driving in towns was fine but parking was fun. Here we have a tendency to reverse into car park spaces - a definite No-No in the US. Also, I hated your 50/55 mph speed limits. When on long trips, my engineer friends always elected me as main driver since they said I pushed the speed limits and got home quicker. Years later, whilst driving Route 66, I did get pulled in New Mexico for.... Speeding. My wife took a photograph via the mirror of me getting a dressing down by annoyed traffic cop!
