Default Heater Valve

Do generic autoshop valves pose any problems over the diving bell-shaped xj6 originals in replacement?

Generics are fine. Just make sure to get one that closes with vacuum applied and opens without vacuum applied. Many are the other way 'round.

Cheers

Yup, as usual Doug has it.

My 83 has an after market plastic generic valve. It works just fine.

Caveat: the hoses and the spigots are complex and very important.
As is the one way vacuum valve. Not to mention the under the intake source of vacuum. And the two spigots just under the battery box.
Invisible, touchy feely territory...

All must be right for the ultra sophisticated Delanair climate
control to work correctly...

supercheapauto in NZ has a 3 such generic valves in stock, 2 of them are the vacuum types primary used by Holden Commodore owners. Neither seem to say as to whether they are the type which "that closes with vacuum applied and opens without vacuum applied" as Doug indicated above. Is there a way to test at the shop?

Standard 5/8" vac heater tap, as in Falcon, XD/XE/XF. Commodore up to 1999.

When at the shop, remove it from its package, and look thru it, it you can see straight thru it, it is what you need.

NO vac is FULL open.

VAc applied closes the flap.

So, out of the box is NO vac, it should be wide open.

Dayco number is DHV5217, and other brands use the 5217 as a base number with their specific prefixes etc.

Nope.

As you said the first is cable operated.

The 2nd is Commodore, late, and no good.

Simply ask them for a heater tap for an XE or XF Falcon.

HV5217 is the Gates number you need.

I hesitate to be more precise as my car is an 83. But, if I were you, I'd search for a vacumn line diagram for your car.

In mine, there are two spigots under the battery box. LHD car !
One small for the smaller of the two hoses. the other just a tad larger for the other.

One way valve: allows vacuum to be "pulled" by the engine, but not returned. Stored in the tank under the brake booster ion LHD cars.

A bit of "think it out" helps.
