HELP 1970 XJ6 4.2 won't keep running after starter stops
#21
I believe the correct name is a Auxiliary starting carburrettor. In the photos it looks that same as what the earlier Mark 2 and S Types have. Usually, there is a thermo switch in the intake manifold that shuts it off when the coolant gets to 35°C. I suspect that it is shutting off early and the car is stalling because it is lean. Perhaps check that switch is activating correctly, or install a manual switch.
I had one of those starting carbs on my 1966 S Type and I never liked it. My personal preference is a manual choke, rather than the automatics - it was an area Jaguar was weak in.

Hello all : I finally fixed it. And it was the distributor. I'm not sure why the symptoms were what they were.... But after a partial overhawl (top plate was very dirty and wasn't turning smoothly on the base plate) and I found out the + wire insulation was partially melted. So I changed that of course. When assembled it looked OK.
Anyways : thank you for your kind help !!! I learned in the process and this knowledge will surely be usefull some day (not too soon I hope)
