I think its easier to do a thorough job if you take it off the car, which is pretty easy.
I use a rag soaked in aerosol throttle body or carb/choke cleaner.

PS-sometimes the management system has to "re-learn" a new idle. Might take a few minutes or, as in the case of my XJR, a couple days.
