Hi, new owner and a couple of questions.
Hi all I picked up a nice s2 XJ6 last week but it has no compression on the front cylinder. Also had a bit of a rattle in the engine. I did some trouble shooting and found the cyl was leaking into the bottom of the engine. So past the rings or hole in piston etc.
Anyway I picked up a spare engine and I am debating weather to pull the head off the old one and have a look and use it with new rings/ piston if the bore isn't damaged just or install the spare engine.
Another thing is the new engine has got the fuel rail and injectors for the fuel injection installed but my car is carby. I noticed the original engine has blanking screws where the injectors would be. So is there any other differences between the carby and injected head or would I just be able to fit the blanking screws to the injected head and still use the carbys?

same car you picked up last week? Here's my opinion: Think Matching Numbers; that car is in good enough shape to keep it original, if you're thinking of doing an engine dismantle, might as well rebuild the original engine to keep the Matching Numbers.
There is a Factory Plate at the firewall/bulkhead with the car's original Engine and Transmission Numbers which you can check with your existing engine.
At the end of the day, cars with matching numbers bring more dinero when reselling.

geez you caught me there, I have no clue, maybe using some kind of magnetic levitation like Ed Leedskalnin did in the Coral Castle?

I'm a little confused.
On the fuel injected engines the injectors fit into the intake manifold, not the cylinder head.
I think the blanking screws you're seeing....if they're in the middle of the cylinder head....are plugs for an abandoned air injection/air pump system.
The fuel injected heads have larger valves but I think you can use a later head on an earlier engine with no problems. Let's wait for someone to confirm that, though. There were several head configurations over the years.
Cheers

Oh ok. Maybe what I am seeing is the air injection system still fitted. I will get a pic and put it up.

Yep. That's the air rail for the AIR system. If you do not have the air pump or you are not interested in the AIR system, you can remove the air rail and replace with threaded plugs or you can do as I did. I removed the air rail and brazed the individual pipes shut, then reinstalled the rail and disabled the air pump diverter valve. In the future, my plan is to move the alternator to the top of the engine where the air pump is now installed, and eliminate the AIR system completely, even though some of you who live in areas with strict emission rules may disagree with me.
