? how to set air gap on a pickup coil?
hi: i replaced the entire pickup coil assembly on my 1987 xj6. upon starting the engine, it will only run at a weak idle and it will not rev when the gas pedal is depressed. i double checked the sequence to ignition wire firing and no problem there. the service manual mentions the air gap between the reluctor teeth and the pickup module needs to be in the range of 0.20mm and 0.35mm but gives no guidance as to how to make an adjustment if needed so here's my questions for the forum. any help would be greatly appreciated:
? how do i get the tooth of the reluctor to line up to the pickup module so i can check the gap?
? if the gap needs to be adjusted, do i turn the 2 set screws mounted on the pickup coil plate? if so which way?
? do i also need to adjust the timing by loosening and turning the distributor assembly so as to advance or retard the timing? i understand there is a securing bolt on the distributor assembly for this purpose.
