Inexpensive rear muffler Ser III XJ6/12
My rear mufflers (which I removed for the bumper modification job) were rotted out at the ends.
Wanting something that would give a bit of a growl to the 12 cylinders I opted to go with a simple glass pack. A bit of research I decided that the Walker #18362 would be a good candidate. Only about $23 each from Summit Racing.
The installation was * almost * a direct bolt-on.....but a bit of work with the Sawz-all was needed.
First, the rear pipe extensions on the original mufflers must be cut off for re-use on the new mufflers. These have the welded-on metal hanger and a slight bend to exit the rear splash panel properly. After cutting them off they into the new mufflers and can be clamped in place.
Next, a trial fit revealed that the overall length is a wee bit long. I had to cut about 1 inch off the stub pipe of the new mufflers.
The new mufflers clamp in place just like the originals and the stub pipes are the correct size....no reducers/adapter needed.
As muffler jobs go this one was almost painless.
Cheers

Neat !!!
1. Your work bench looks kinda like mine. Cluttered, stained, worn and with a multi plug for cords on the face.
2. My lump came with a pair of glass packs that look very much like yours. It wasn't a lump then!! Welded in place tips and all??? Many muffler shops don't mess with clamps ! Good and not so good.
3. I kept them and the Jaguar mufflers in front of these. A true twin exhaust with twin cats and an H pipe. Not loud, it burbles nicely. No back rap. A nice V8 purr.
4. The V12 ought purr nicely. Can you pipe it as a true dual system?

Well used, well worn....lots of history burned and burnished into those planks

At the end of the day I prefer clamps so the system can be taken apart.....although not always easily

There's no sweeter sound on earth

Jaguar built the V12s with true dual exhaust. I'll be adding a crossover pipe, though. No functional advantage on the V12 but it's supposed to enhance the sound.

Doug, I have just added a crossover pipe to my Series 2 XJ12....
I fitted a pair of stainless silencer replacement pipes from Simply Performance http://simplyperformance.com/
While I was doing the job, I thought I would fit a simple crossover pipe using a couple of good quality stainless T-Pieces.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to hear what difference it has made yet, because the four carbs are on the work bench at the moment after stripping and overhauling.
I have a few other winter jobs to do, but it should be up and running again in the next month or so.

Yeah, there is some "science" I read of in respect H and X
pipes.
One is as to scavenging. Something like Setting the cross at the "last of the most heat. Pipe color to assist in finding it. Effect probably lost on a "street car".
Then, harmonics. Reduce or eliminate raspiness and back rap.
The second is the reason I had the muffler guy include an H. probably well back from the scavenge "sweet spot".
Got a compliment the other day on it's sound.
It sounds good, even to my "challenged" ears.
The project before the Jag was a "warmed up" flat head Ford
V8. Twin straight pipes off headers and "blocked" heat risers.
Wicked.....

I did wonder where would be the "best" place to put the H-pipe, in terms of sound etc, but since I was cutting and shutting the exhaust at this part of the system I decided to slip the crossover pipe in here while i was at it.

Playing with the exhaust on my 350 XJ6 and was thinking of installing a 2 in / 2 out catalytic converter just in front of the 2 middle mufflers which are in their stock locations . The over the axle pips follow and then the rear mufflers. Has any one tried this set up? My thinking is the cat would act like an H pipe,, provide the same results sound wise and keep the Government happy.

I'll merely pick up a Euro 'Y',
and have a proper exhaust system fabricated, the cat installed as you say, just ahead of the stock BL mufflers.
It will Definitely be an improvement over the current debacle.

Still miles away from hearing it run. I'm checking items off the list slowly but quite steadily! An hour here, and hour there.
Oil cooler installed, driveshaft center bearing done, I should have the radiator and condenser installed this week.
Cheers
