Installing a aj16 into XJ6 coupe help.
Hello I am a new member who lives in California and I have owned and restored a few Jags over the years. My son and I have started a XJ6 coupe resto and we have decided to put a later model AJ16 drivetrain in it as it is currently without an engine. We purchased a running but totaled 1996 Jaguar XJ6 as a donor vehicle and we are in the process of stripping it down. I have successfully rewired a few cars over the years but I am finding the wiring on the 1996 XJ6 a little intimidating. My first question of many more to come is about the factory security system. What must I do to bypass it without causing problems or is it as easy as just removing the module? Thanks.

Can not say with specifity. Not familiar with the 96 car. Saw a beauty at the gas station the other day..
1. Check the list here for the 96, and seek an answer as to the security system.
2. Get the wire schematic for the 96, study the logic of the module and how to defeat it.
3.Check with Andrew at jaguar specialties. He sponsors and post here His swaps are to GM power, but has encountered that security system for sure...
What a slick project...
I and others will follow if you post progresss..

I hate to be a party-pooper but I think your going to find the sump interferes with the front crossmember. In the Jaguar Journal a few issues back there was a 3-part article on how they cut and welded a big chunk out of the front crossmember to fit your engine into a coupe. You can find the past issues available for free down load Here.
I full understand your desire to keep the car all Jaguar. But it is going to be a ton of work whereas there are proven kits available to quickly and easily install a GM small block. Or, of course, you can easily get a used replacement XJ6 Series III 4.2 engine and keep the car original from David at Everydayxj.com

Over the years there have been a number of successful swaps with the AJ6 going into a Series I-II-III car. There's no reason I know of that the AJ16 can't work if you slog thru the additional electronics.
The security system on USA market X300s didn't used a 'chipped' key, so there's one less thing to worry about. I can't remember many details about the security system although I drove an X300 for years. I don't think it had any "immobilzer" capability at all. I recall that is was simply a burglar alarm, so to speak.
I can't answer your specific question, sorry.
Cheers

It fits, It fits, It fits.
You need motor mount plates from a XJS that had a AJ16 engine in it for the front location of motor mounts. Do what ever you need to do to get trans mount to fit. I can send pictures if you need them. Send your ECM to XJR engineer on this forum to delete security feature in ECM. Use same shift cable. I,ll stop there and wait for more questions.

I stand corrected. Larry's looks awesome. That guy in the Jaguar Journal is going to be really pissed that he paid a fortune to have his front crossmember butchered when he could have just used one from an XJS! Good luck with the conversion. Please keep us posted with lots of photos.

You want to punt on the X300 and get a 94/95 XJS. Preferably a convertible so you can use the X braces too. It's nearly a bolt in and only a few custom parts are required when using an XJS. I've done it with working power and heated seats, working ABS, working Air bag, wiper logic, and sport mode. All the minor things like brake lines, HVAC system, blower motors A/C hoses will work out.

I used a plumb bob and large sheets of paper taped to the floor to measure the size of the 4.2 engine in place, Then rolled the engine/ trans on a wheeled pallet in place to see what was going to clash as far as sheet metal, bulkheads and other immoveable items. I knew ahead of time about the motor mount plates up front would be a unmovable location point. Remove 4.2 engine, Install motor mount plates from XJS and install 4.0 AJ 16SC engine.
Install rear trans mount, Shorten drive shaft, Align and level. For the center exhaust pipe I used a "Y" pipe from a series three but flipped over and bent to fit. A/C condenser is from a XJS. A bunch of real small fittings then I was on my way. The ECM failed on me recently and decided to fit a aftermarket unit from EFISource. It's like a brand new world.

XJ6 and (California?) AJ16
Hi, this is Andrew from Jaguar Specialties- I just noticed this thread and read it with interest. What caught my attention is the fact that this is all happening in California, and I have a question.
I noticed that the XJ6C in question is a 76 which means that it could be subject to California emissions. Are you located in a county that has the biennial emissions tests? Or are you outside of that? (lucky you if you are....). If this is a car that will have to be tested regularly, you may first want to have a conversation with the California BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) referee center. To be legal in California (and I'm not saying this combo cannot be) the car has to be put together properly, etc.,. and the BAR has guidelines on what is acceptable and what not. It's important to know all of this upfront to avoid (costly) frustrations later.....
For example, were you aware that only the factory air intake system (from the donor car) would be legal to use on this install??? Only factory programming in the computer is acceptable, and they check.... Little things like that
If you need info on this process, feel free to get in touch with me, let me know
Thanks
Andrew

I don't have those restraints' here in Florida but my install used a intact catalytic converter and the complete intake manifold but I ran into size restraints with the factory air cleaner? It would be up to Mr. Simon to take this matter up with California Smog board. The air cleaner was not a impossible problem to overcome, Just easier to overcome with a aftermarket unit.
