Insufficient airflow in footwells

Insufficient airflow in footwells
Apologies to our friends down under where it is summer but where I live it is freezing cold. I am a firm believer of exercising old Jaguars, even in the winter (on days when it is totally dry on the roads and no salt). The problem was that I wasn’t getting much airflow from the little footwell louvers. So I’m looking through the Service Manual to see if I can find a fix. Found lots of information on the heating and cooling flaps but very little on the air distribution flaps. Then I saw an illustration of the vent for the back seat and two small knobs. So I break out the Owners Manual for the ’79 to see what they do. Turns out they control airflow to the back seat footwells, but here is the weird part, it didn’t say which way you turn them. So I get out the Owners Manual for the ’87. Same thing – says that the knobs control footwell airflow but not which way to turn them. So after some experimentation it turns out you turn the left knob clockwise to get less air and the right knob counterclockwise for less air on that side. With both backseat footwells turned off I now have plenty of air coming out the front footwell louvers.

the knobs open or close flaps that allow or stop air directed towards the rear floor.
then there is the round plastic Vent above the knobs which can be opened or closed too by turning the knob at the center of the vent.
Jaguars have never provided much air flow to the rear seat.
My '65 S type has a somewhat similar vent for the rear seat in which the open position is as good as the closed position.
In other words, useless.

Hi Jeff,
As I am building my S3 strictly for my self, I have added and subtracted a few thing along the way. I read somewhere (J.S. possibly) that blocking those two air ducts to the rear seat vents dramatically increases the air flow out of the front foot-well vents. Here's a picture of my "conversion". Orange caps are from Cutters brand bug repellent cans, absolute perfect tight fit.

When I worked on my Console;
I wanted the center vent to still be operational, because sometimes the cool is just too cool on my feet, or Hot is just too hot, and I don't want to be fooling with the controls all the time. So I open or close the Rear center vent to redirect cold/hot air.
Besides. I like playing with it.

...No, I do NOT want cool or warm air in the back seat but the ducts must be properly connected to the air box back there or there's no way to shut it off! I even taped shut those little flaps on the bottom of the box (they seem to be quite worthless anyway) because the little knobs wouldn't close them.
I knew I had a Massive AC leak somewhere because even when I closed the round vent in the back I didn't have any more air up front. I know why now that I've seen the shoddy way the tubes were connected (or rather, Weren't) but I'm confident I've fixed that now, because all the ducts are Properly fitted to all the other parts. I should have complete control over the air flow in the whole Climate Control system.
